Does anyone know if I would get away with displaying my front plate like this?, I have just balanced it there for picture purpose, so it would be straight and flat.

60. Fixing of registration plate
(1) (a) Where a vehicle has been so designed that a space has been provided for the fixing
of a registration plate, the plate shall be fixed in the space so provided.
( Where a space is not provided the plate shall be fixed in the manner specified in
paragraph (2).
(2) Subject to paragraph (3), a registration plate shall be fixed vertically or, where that is not
reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practical at the front and
rear of every motor vehicle in such manner that the characters of the registration mark shall, at all
times, be visible from the front or the rear of the motor vehicle.
(3) No registration plate shall be fixed in the front of a trailer.
(4) Where a trailer or a semi-trailer is drawn by another vehicle, the registration plate of the
drawing vehicle shall be fixed on the back right-hand side and that of the trailer or semi-trailer on the
back left-hand side of the trailer or semi-trailer.
(5) A registration plate shall be fixed at a height of not more than 1.5 metres from ground level.

Your "chosen spot" still has to be on the front of the car and the windscreen (as mentioned in the OP's opening question and what this thread is supposed to be about), on almost every car is most definitely not the front of the car so the answer is no, it is not legal to display your front number plate in the windscreen.

They don't even need an excuse to pull you over, but if they have one (even a little one like this) then you're asking for trouble. Then it is all too easy for them to go round your car and pick out stuff that will give you grief, a tyre they aren't happy with, windscreen wash empty etc etc.

I think part of the argument against this would be that the roof rack is not a permanent fixture and thus would be easy to remove along with the plate.

The taste police will certainly be on your case..

There's something that all cars have in common, from Lambos to Trabants - the positioning of legal requirement specifics, such as lighting and plates. You can mess about with the car itself to quite a generous degree, but don't start messing about with said legal items unless you want trouble.
