GT and Genesis

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I've dropped in the introductions before, but seeing as both these cars are soon to get a massive overhaul I thought I'd share

So I've got a 1993 Polo Coupe Genesis 1.3, which has been lowered 60/40 and running 15/7 et20 Rota Grid V. Other than that it's pretty standard, I have bike carbs but I'll have questions on engine stuff later.

My other half Zoe has a 1991 Polo Coupe GT, which we don't actually know a huge about mod wise. Its got a lot of power, and I mean a lot. Its obviously been chipped as it hits just over 8k RPM. Has a pipercross air filter, aftermarket exhaust manifold. Its been lowered (alot) on staggered 13" Revolution 5 spokes (6j front 8j rear). It did have a Omex Rev Limter installed, but this literally killed the engine so I've pulled it out.

Both cars have their MOTs due, the Genesis (known as Guss) should be fine, its going in tomorrow and I've fully sorted it out so fingers crossed.

The GT (known as Sid) has been sat not doing much. He has extended arches on him and they're pretty ruined. The front bumper and bas bar are knackered, the interior is a bit rough round the edges and the engine needs a good solid service. Both have tatty paint.

So our plans? Well we plan to make it to Ultimate Dubs on the 1st of November, and our list of things to do are big.

Plans for Sid:

Remove cheap arches and weld in some MK1 Golf arches

Full service

Replace the bumpers with different ones, we're doing this idea with Guss too, we're not going to tell but we will show you if it works

Chrome the rims, atm they're silver/black and zoe isnt keen.

Put Guss' interior in (All the good bits anyways)

Possibly adjustable coilovers

Remove all the exterior trim

Fix body and repaint all areas that are bad

Get a nice little subtle sound system installed, nothing huge, just conventional so it's good as a daily

Plans for Guss:

Completely strip the interior, including dash, excluding carpets

Build a new dash thats super simple

carpet the boot

MORE POWER

BIGGER BRAKES

Cage?

Same bumper idea as Sid

Golf mk1 Berg front splitter made to fit

Custom make some Lourves

small diffuser

straight pipe

bike carbs

not bothering with paint and body, aslong as its solid I'm not bothered, I have plans to track it

Unfortunatly I'm at work a lot lately, and Zoe is in Crete so the builds are a little stale at the moment, but I'll post what I can and how they're going, we have a month to make most of this happen so fingers crossed

Also a few questions,

Do the GT and genesis have different block codes and stuff?

I know GTs have different camshafts, ecus and intakes but what else is different?

How much power increase would bike carbs, GT or Racing camshaft, and straight pipe with a new manifold have on the Genesis?

What is the max Rev limit the engines can handle?

Can you swap a twin cam head onto the standard blocks?

What bigger brakes can we run with 15s from other VWs?

photos of both

Sorry we have almost no pictures of the GT at the moment, I'll probably get some of it tomorrow

cheers

I still think the arches on the GT look cool, can I ask what the idea is behind welding in the mk1 Golf arches?

To be honest if I were you with those plans I'd swap the builds...if you want a track car then starting with the GT is a much better starting point. At least 25bhp more than the genesis, which with bike carbs etc can easily see another 25bhp increase. Plus they have the ARB in the rear beam and it looks like a non-sunroof model which is better for a cage. Just what I would do though.

The difference between your 2 engines is more than just the cam. Pretty much the head and block are the only things that are the same. The GT has a higher compression ratio, double valve springs, multipoint injection and a better cam as you know. The gearbox will have closer ratios too.

As for brakes, I'd just look into G40 brakes. They work much better than the solid 239 discs you have on both the cars. They are a pretty cheap upgrade and you can still run 13s. However you do get 256mm upgrades using either VW or Vauxhall parts, but I've never done that upgrade so don't know much about either.

Well Zoe being a girl wants hers to look super clean, and she's always loved mk1 golfs and seeing as her arches have been cut, bent and buckled we felt getting a set of mk1 golf repair arches was the best plan to fix them.

Nah the GT has a sunroof :( but the Genesis has a straighter and cleaner shell so I felt it was a better base to start off. ARB is? Sorry I'm still fairly new to this haha

Jees, so pistons and everything? Whats the differences in compression ratios?

hmm awesome thanks I'll look into more brake options, but ill keep G40s in mind, tempted to go back to 14s if the right set come up

To me the GT having bent and buckled arches would be even more reason to turn it into a track car, and if the Genesis is cleaner then use that as the road car. As if something happens on the track, if the shell is already a bit rough around the edges then at least it shouldn't worry you too much.

Anyway ARB stands for Anti-Roll Bar. The rear beam in the GT will have an ARB built in, whereas the Genesis won't. It is something you will want for the Genesis if you decide to track it.

The GTs compression ratio is 10:1 and the Genesis will be 9.5:1. Not a million miles away but every little helps.

I think these both look epic :) what tyres are you using on the 15s? And do they rub much? Looking forward to seeing how these progress

Its honestly something I can't do to swap which shell we use because I don't have enough time or funds to throw at the GT myself as we are both funding our own cars, rather than joint

Ahhh yeah I was thinking about getting an ARB for the rear, and stiffening it up a lot more

I guess so, ironically I've just found a cheap GT engine in my local area so I'm inquiring after it

and I'm running Toyo Proxes T1-Rs which are 195/45 and I used to rub loads, I have small grooves on the front as they poke and the bumpstops are just letting them catch the arch, my rears got chewed up because i hadn't rolled the arches enough the first time and caused it to rip out some of the tyre

picture to show what the arches kept doing for a while

also I dont know how well you can see it but my arches aren't any straighter than the GT's
