I'm really sorry to break this to you but your 'GT' does not have a GT engine. Yes it is registered as a GT but someone has fitted a single point injection engine

I hope you knew this already and best of luck in restoring her

hoe you didnt pay over the odds for that as its a 1.3 55bhp engine rahter than the 1.3 75bhp

i'd get onto the seller as thats probably worth £200 at the most

Hi guys ... Yes unfortunately I had feared this as he told me it has had a engine replacement but haven't got round to checking yet ... Only poaid 200 or it so the gamble was reflected in the price. On the hunt for a GT engine ... :)

I would check that it hasn't been stripped of other GT parts like the rear beam and the fuel pump too, though saying that the expansion tank is still there.

Did the seller say why the engine was replaced?

At least you knew it was a gamble. You'll want to check the gearbox code too, see if that is a GT one or not.

He didn't know much apart from he knew the engine had been replaced with a another 1.3 engine as the original blew up ... Unfortunately that's all I know .... Having said that I haven't looked through the massive amount of paperwork I got with it yet !

What's the differences between the GT rear beams ect ... I could upload some pictures of this later for you guys to confirme or not .. That woul be much appreciated :)

I have also noticed that although the header tank is there .... There is no plug in the wireing for the coolant lever sensor ... I suppose this is because its no a GT loom :/

The gearbox code should either be AHD or CEH, the code is stamped on the flat area of the box below the thermostat housing. It can be hard to see with that in the way especially if it is dirty or corroded.

The rear beams have an Anti Roll Bar built into them on the GT, it is pretty easy to spot as it is just a bar that runs along the back side of the beam.

You're right the GT loom and SPI loom are completely different, so if you were to swap it back you would need the wiring loom for the engine bay and the engine itself. It is by no means a hard conversion, just seems odd someone would go to the effort of converting a GT to an SPI.

Maybe the best solution would be to find a Polo that has been converted to a GT and swap the engines over.

Are the GT wiring looms hard to find ??? I have managed to locate a GT engine which I'd like to run on bike carbs !!

Providing I have a GT and nothing been nicked this is ...

They are getting harder to find like everything else, but not impossible.

But if you are going down the bike carb route then you won't need a GT loom.

Soo I've checked the gearbox ... It's a CEG box ... Guessing not a GT box ... I also can't see an anti roll bar on my rear beam .... Looks like I've been we'll and truly GT stripped :(

At least a CEG 'box isn't a bad gearbox. Sounds like maybe your car was used to convert a 1.3CL to a GT....

soo whats the difference between the 2 gearboxs, just ratios or something... is it worth getting a proper one for my gt engine ???

same with the rear beam and possible fuel pump ... are these all noticeable different items

is there a forsale place on this forum aswell or any particular places i can get hold of parts ect...

The GT 'boxes are closer ratio which make them a bit more fun to drive. Although the CEG box isn't too bad like I say. It has a longer 5th gear so better on long journeys.

I would recommend trying to get a GT rear beam if you can, these Polos don't handle well at all so little differences like the rear ARB do help. The fuel pump on the GT also flows more but I have heard of people running conversions on the normal pumps and having no issues. But I'd rather run a GT one if you can.

one more question... how can i tell the difference between a normal and a GT fuel pump ??

If you can find a part number on the pump it should be 867906091 if it is a GT pump. The CL Pump is the same but with a 'B' at the end.

On closer inspection ... turns out i do have a GT rear beam and a GT fuel pump :) Bonus !!!!

so must have just been the engine swap after all ...
