Hi all. Hope everyone is amazing. Having a mad issue with my '83, 1043cc stock bready. Keeps cutting out when i come to a stop. Having to pull the choke out just before i come to stop. The idle is also proper lumpy.

Things i have done recently:

Carb refurbed,

Dizzy refurbed,

Vacuum tubes checked and replaced,

New plugs,

New ht leads,

Can of bg44k,

Timing checked,

Fuel/air checked,

New starter motor,

New fuel lines and filter,

New filter element.

Spent about 3-4 months being used occasionally, took it for a long motorway run after all this was done last week. About 60 miles each way. Was fine on the way down, drove like a dream. Had about a 6 hour break before the return trip and it was on the way back that the cutting out thing started. I adjusted the fast idle screw and that kinda helped but now it's started doing it again.

I'm thinking it may be the carb mount leaking. Can anyone suggest anything else it could be? Or how to check the mount? Or a part number for the mount? Or just any guidance at all.

Got part number for mount. Will be replacing that as soon as i can.

Replaced flange, used wynns black rtv gasket goo, fired her up, no lumps or hunting. Used some copper based stuff that halfords recommended before. That was just in pieces on the all the mating faces. Will let her sit and set overnight and adjust idle and fuel mix.

How did you get on?

I had air gaps when I first mounted my carb. Had trouble with getting it to idle smoothly etc, pushing down firmly but not too heavy handed on the carb righted the issue. To be absolutely sure it was an air leak around the mounting point just sprayed a generous amount of wd40 around the bottom of the carb where it mounts, sure enough where there was a gap the wd40 got sucked straight in. It looks like it evaperates but where there isn't an air gap the wd40 sits for a few seconds longer.

Let her sit overnight, fired her up, no hunting, silky smooth. Adjusted the fuel mix and idle and took her for a nice long run. Well happy.

May have to set fire to the guy in halfords for suggesting that copper based crapola.

Will be having another crack at idle and fuel mix later or tomorrow as i think it can be improved.

Recommend the wynns stuff though. Proper job!

Didn't use wd40, used carb cleaner. Only cuz it was closer to the front of the box in the shed. Did the same as what you had though. Revs picked up a little when i sprayed and then went back to bein rough.

I would think the revs picking up is because while the solvent (regardless of what you use) is being sucked through the leak holes the holes are temporarily blocked. If i recall that is what mine did too, I think I just took the carb off cleaned up the surfaces and remounted with gasket paper inbetween. It was a while ago that I did it though so may not be remembering quite right.

I've not used much wynns stuff but I got a tin of the hydraulic lifter service fluid because my engine was very ticky, I didn't expect much but was very impressed. Ran the engine for a while and as I was talking to my friend about how the stuff hadn't worked the ticking tappets suddenly stopped ticking.

Mine has been running like an absolute bitch for ages. Been chasing a lumpy idle and a flatspot for about a year and a half. Literally worked my way from fuel filler cap forwards. Flatspot turned out to be vacuum tube hooked up in the wrong place, idle turned out to be a crap seal on the carb mount. Now seems to be running sweetly. Just gotta keep it that way.
