Hello everyone,

After a long time without an old polo i finally spotted one that i couldn't refuse. I love the saloons and this one was low miles, not too far from me, cheap and completely honest/standard. Owner was selling due to health issues and i spotted it on here with no MOT and needing a wash but it looked straight.

The owner was such a decent guy and had been completely honest with everything about the car. Bought without test driving for his very fair price and got it brought home. Next day it flew through its MOT test needing absolutely nothing and the MOT guy was blown away by how clean it was underneath.

Here it is after it arrived back from the MOT station and i washed it:

It really is extremely tidy and the only tiny bit of rust is a surface mark about 2cm long by the door where some dozy sod has flung the seatbelt off and it has chipped the paint. This will be sorted out in a bodyshop at some point in the not so distant future anyway.

So although it was very standard i refuse to drive a mk3 polo. I do thought intend to do all jobs using the best i can afford and have already bought quite a bit for it.

First thing i did was fit a rev counter in the dash clocks yet retaining its tiny 40k miles :-) Set of pressed plates, new headunit and speakers (original locations). I then purchased a suspension kit (AP), Glader ARB blocks, new TCA arms, new top mounts, new bump stops, all new nuts and bolts for the suspension going back on. I then set about finding some wheels that i have always wanted.

ATS classics in 13x7" et 20. I also purchased some 15mm hubcentric spacers for the rear, all new bolts, extended locking wheel nuts and bolt covers.

Picked up the wheels which the lacquer had died on and set about refurbishing them. Had the tyres whipped off and filed and sanded the minimal curbing from the lips. By which point they looked like this:

I never wanted them black and polished. Not into polished wheels on an 90's beater so had them powdercoated silver. They came back like this:

So chuffed with the finish. Tyres go back on this weekend when i fit all the suspension parts.

Gave the car a proper was on Sunday in the nice weather and polished and waxed it. Cat 1 alarm/immob fitted. Cleaned the mud out of the rear arch lips as two of the rivets had broken on the drivers side lower arch which will be riveted back on come the weekend. Fitted the pressed plates and here is how it sits until the weekend.....

Nice to be back in a polo.....albeit a 1.3 5 speed (NZ) and not a G40 like my last two :-)

Are plans for this to go G40 or is it just a runaround car? Looks clean and I'm liking the silver alot.

I will probably change the engine in the future but i am not mad for a G40 engine unless a really good full turn key conversion came my way. Engines are so thin on the ground compared to when i got my first polo. Id be happy with a good solid gt conversion to be honest.

I like the silver. Always liked silver. So grandad.

One of the cleanest, lowest miles and best condition salloons I have seen since joing CP. Very nice car and the wheels look much better powder coated silver too.

Are the plans a full nut and bolt restore then?

Very nice, good to see clean examples of original cars can still be had for reasonable money.

A G40 loon would be awesome though!

Not nut and bolt rebuild. More a case of if i change something change the tired bits at the same time.

Just want a nice cool old polo to tool about with again...

There was an old thread on here of a guy with an NZ and his Cat version which is meant to have 55hp had over 60hp like 63 or something, The non cat version is meant to be quite a bit more powerful too so if you had the decat down pipe and picked up a cheap GT cam you might even end up close to GT power without the need of a swap and it could cost peanuts

Here is the saloon as it stands after i changed all the suspension parts and fit the wheels. Pretty happy with how it looks and i love the silver.

Yes i could go lower... blah blah but i have done those things when i was young and it just makes for a shit driving car. Engine being rebuilt to go in and then have an exhaust made and i am going to leave it alone.

I don't like to be a critic but I can't help but think a higher profile tire would have suited better and filled the arches a bit

Very nice. I've always liked silver polos with arch trims.

I'm not normally one for tinted tail lights but I think this would really suit a darkish tint. Either that or tint the indicators red.

I'm a fan of the black/polished ATS classics myself, but the colour you have looks classy. Looks ace.

Tyres are on the shopping list as these are just nankang shite that came with the wheels to put me on. I like the profil and to be fair the 'arch gap' isn't horrific. See how i feel come tyre time. I'm not going lower thats for sure. Got a full GT sat here. Just gonna spend some timer freshening it up.
