On the back of vio's crash I think I am going to invest in a car dash camera , I would like one for front and back . Can anyone help ? or give me advice on buying one ?

I'd recommend that site to help with a search, has comparisons of what's on the market + lots of reviews on their forum as well.

ATM I've just been running a G1W-H (£35ish) up front, but after that crash I'm gonna just use that for the back, and get a G1W-C up front. It might be better to get 2 separate cameras & a twin port cig lighter adapter rather than a single cam with dual lens, as a lot of the dual lens cut back on quality on the rear camera.

One word of advice - don't skimp when it comes to buying as there are a lot of cheap knock-offs on ebay and the like. My first cam was only £15, but even though it said "1080p full HD" the quality was so bad you couldn't read a reg past sunset no matter how close you were, effectively making it useless

I've been considering one of these for a while too but it's the mounting I'm struggling with, I wouldn't want it on display. I'm assuming there are weatherproof ones available. I'd wire in properly too and not rely on the cig lighter.

The better ones have a built in GPS sensor so it records your speed/position etc and an accelerometer to give a "G" reading in the event of a crash (handy for whiplash claims!!!)

I mean an actual satnav as they are positioned in the right place to look forward and back and also have the gps stuff. it could also provide a map with the video fottage

Product Description

The Mobius action camera is manufactured by the original and genuine maker of the ever popular 808 #16 key fob camera but is now available in the UK via Amazon.

This tiny and lightweight video recording device, which can also take photos, is completely portable and runs from the built in rechargeable battery, recordings are stored on a micro SD card (not supplied, 32G max). From a full charge the battery will last about 1 hour.

A Class 4 or above micro SD card is recommended.

It records in HD quality 1080P and in real time at 30fps (or 720P at 60fps) and also records audio with 3 different volume levels selectable plus the option to switch sound off completely.

There are various helmet, windscreen, cycle and tripod mounts (plus an in car charger and other accessories) available for the Mobius but it is supplied as standard with a mounting base & USB cable for linking to your PC or laptop.

The video format used is .MOV with the H.264 compression codec technique. When one video file is saved the next one will start with a 1 second overlap, so no lost video. You can choose between 5, 10, 15 minute or "max" file length settings. The device will stop, save and then continue recording a new clip. The "max" setting will keep recording until 4GB is used, this is to keep the files in manageable sizes, a new clip will then begin recording. You can, of course, also choose to just manually stop a recording using the buttons on the front of the Mobius.

You can also take photos and can use the time lapse feature to snap a still every 1-60 seconds should you wish to.

These features are all setup using the menu system, a link is supplied to access the menu system software as well as for downloading the instruction manual PDF. This link also give you access to the latest firmware, so as the manufacturer adds new features you will be able to download them to your device.

£130 is a lot for a dashcam. For the same price you could buy 3 G1W's (front, rear & inside), a 4-way cigarette lighter adapter for them (and still have a socket free) OR everything you need to hardwire them all into the car, 3 sets of extra windscreen mounts and charger cables for swapping between cars, and a whopper meal from Burger King.

Granted the 402G comes with a lot of extras like GPS positioning, speed and parking mode (the last one is somewhat useful, if you want to keep your dashcam on display in the car when you're not using it. I've had one dashcam stolen already), but I wouldn't consider them essential.

There's a point where you're better off just buying an actual video camera and mounting it inside the car, rather than spend the equivalent on a purpose-built dashcam. All depends on your budget, but I personally wouldn't go over £50 per cam. Hence I always recommend the G1W series, as the quality seems to be pretty much equal to that of the 402Gs at more than 1/3rd of the cost. And don't forget that there's a lot to consider apart from the actual camera, and that includes the car you drive. Our classic Polos especially when lowered aren't exactly a smooth ride, which means your video quality can always end up blurry from vibrations when windscreen-mounted, irregardless of what camera you're using.

Point taken on price. However what if the 402 lasts three times longer ? and the quality, and extras are far better.
You could save money, and have extra chips with yer Whopper.

I'd say when you get past a certain point (ie after the cheap knock-off cameras on ebay), the difference in quality between cams becomes pretty marginal. Fair enough it might be the difference between catching the reg of the guy who hits you and not, but I'd still heavily consider the car & cost, rather than just try and find the absolute highest-quality piece of equipment on the market. If I had the Rolls Royce Ghost or Maybach 62 that I want, I'd gladly get a 402. But for a Polo that costs just a little more than 2x the price of that cam, I think it makes more sense to go with something a little cheaper. I've had my G1W since June this year, aside from a crappy microphone, not a single issue with it

I finished my dashcam projects in my black and in my daily polo already in 2014, now i found the time to write all down in the blog of my homepage.
