Hi guys I've got a bit of a wobble going on at speed. ( Wobble more like driving over a continuous cattle grid till I slow down to 40) so the long journey I've got on Friday will be a nightmare. Any ideas where I can get a new steering rack? Ebay has nothing. Vw heritage has no idea ( unless it's aircooled, bus, or golf ) ces and euro I just get a blank expression ( rabbit in headlights ) I've got new rod ends but the old ones have welded them self's on so no luck getting them off. With out cutting and throwing sparks.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you had the wheels balanced lately? That would be the first place to start.

For the steering arms you can still get complete units, for the drivers side anyway as that is just one none adjustable piece. But you should be able to get the passenger side too.

Also a good thing to check is the brakes, badly warped discs can cause a wheel wobble at speed.

yeah swap the wheels round and see what happens

I've had the wheels balanced and it helped a little but I recon it's the track rod ends ones a little warn but it a pig to come off

Only the passenger side end will come off. The drivers side needs the whole steering arm replaced.

Have you looked at tracking too? Try the simple things first before you start tearing apart steering racks and so on.

if they're worn then they need to come off anyway as said one side is fixed already

unbolt them at the inner fixing and you can destroy the other end if need be

id still try some other wheels if possible , they can balance up okay and still be buckled or mishaped etc

As above, start with the basics, except my starting point with any steering problem is to check and adjust if necessary, the tyre pressures.

Wobble plates, as used in the garage, are great for checking for wear in the steering, as they work with the weight of the car pressing down, as it would on the road.

You can get a pretty good idea of any wear in the bottom joint, with the tyre on the ground or on ramps, by attempting to lift the joint with the aid of a tyre lever type of bar, directly under the ball joint itself - any movement in the joint will become obvious.

Check the wheel bearings by jacking up the car and grasping the top and bottom of the tyre, then alternately pulling and pushing with each hand, again any movement will be obvious.

Steering joints (track-rod ends) can be checked with the weight on the ground or on ramps - You need an assistant in the driving seat to 'shake' the steering wheel in a semi-rotational position whilst you observe the joints - again you will see and be able to feel any movement between the ball-pin and the housing.

Thanks for the advice guys. I had the wheels checked and the did check the wishbone ball joints and they are all sound. When I brought new track ends I got two the same both threaded so I took ns off and had to heat it to break it free. wish I had read this first. Had to cut the ball joint to get the os off and to find out its a fixed bar.... then spent ages arguing with euro carparts that the sold me the wrong one so hope to pick up the right one fixed bar tomorrow morning. Hope once they are in it will fix the wobble problem.
