Haha thanks kwijibo!

got another throttlebody today, quick swap and basic setting with vagcom and shes running great, twitchiness and rev hunting gone along with a rough idle when it wanted to. now its smooth, quiet and great!

took the old one and popped of the plastic cover, the rubber seal was good and no signs of exterior dirt getting in, it actually looked to be fine, but on a deeper look I noticed a rubbing mark next to one of the tracks that the self adjusting motor picks the signal from.

I'm assuming this is interfering with the overall contact in that particular zone and thus sending intermittant or erroneous signals or its not reading it at all there and takes the lowest signal from further round, which would confuse it because two copper contacts would be open when they should be closed at the 0 position. this is all theoretical of course but it's all I can see from what I have!

  • I keep looking at this thread for updates lol. This was my black one; Don't want to steal your thread, just the memories! Guy called Amit owned it before me.

Since we are sharing memories this is my old black 6n 16v I do miss it at times...but boost is more fun I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, nice to see someone tidying a car up first rather t

  • Picked up a bootlid in the correct colour without the third brake light and with a wiper arm, all wiring and boot struts, complete with no rust for £30 and guy threw on the front 16v grille badge t

So I saw a picture of a black polo with standard indicators on and it just looked brilliant! so I dug out my old ones from Emma and put them on, lovely :D

TWrS6Cq.jpg

X6Y6nGM.jpg

also took 6n2 rears off and put Emmas on until I grab some valver rears, I have some in the pipeline but overspent so waiting on some funds lol

fhRbIOp.jpg

need to get them solitudes sorted now, that's a long time saying now over a year and a half hahaha

so I managed to "properly" check the timing today, using the good old "make do with what I have" method aka pikeytech

put car into 5th gear, remove #1 spark plug, place long screwdriver in hole, remove cam cover, jack one side up and rotate drive wheel until piston 1 reaches TDC and check timing marks.

qcClVb4.jpg

and the result is.......(drum roll)

*ding*

g7YTlXN.jpg

all in time and lovely, onto other things!

I got quite lucky as #1 was damn near TDC from parking up in the morning so didnt have to do a lot of turning the wheel and fighting other compression strokes :D

just bought this off fleabay

nice little bit of stuff to add to the folder for the car :) wouldnt have got it if it wasn't a black valver in the pic haha

so a few things to rabbit on about, ramblings if you will!

first and foremost, motorsport season is just round the corner and this excites me! get to take Roxy on many roadtrips around the country :D an easy break in is the Harewood training day this weekend :)

I had gotten hold of a oil cooler (commonly found on 6n2 GTI's) and thought about making a seperate system using an old heater matrix exchanger and a 12v pump, but after a bit of discussion this has been put on a back burner as it could be making problems where I had none, until the need might arise for one, I'll leave it for now!

I have also researched the the 6n2 GTI inlet manifold I have got as to how it works on the AFH and read that it could actually have some adverse effects low down and not actually deliver much extra at the top, this could be due to plenum size and runner length, and the fact the that 6n2 GTI has VVT and the AFH didnt, plus the fact that the AFH inlet has variable runner length and the GTI didnt means I'm trying to add 2 negatives driveability wise to make a positive, theoretically it wont be good on the road but might see better numbers on a dyno. In the face of things I'm still gonna give it a whirl anyway, won't hurt!

Theoretically it should be the other way, combine the variable runners and the VVT and have awesome driveability but I don't have a 6n2 GTI, and quite frankly, don't want one either haha.

whatever, it didn't stop me giving it a clean!

nice and shiny, took the injectors out, it's been sat for a while and it was well oxidised, which only meant the fuel rail and injectors need some love, wasn't there a chap on here who does the injector cleaning service or sent them off to a place that did?

also does anyone know the difference between GTI injectors and AFH injectors?

It was payday, and I've promised myself a decent filter since I got the car, finally I managed to get one! a bit of deliberation went in to the choice, but I felt that Pipercross pipped the pole for a replacement panel filter.

EMzNtNt.jpg

qCIPe4f.jpg

I got it delivered to work (where I get all my car parts delivered, because woman) and skipped across the yard when it arrived.

to be fair the filter should have been replaced when I serviced the car, but I held off because I knew I was getting this.

suffice it to say it was probably overdue :sorry:

VPVpyGI.jpg

NqmfuC8.jpg

it even makes good noises!

you may hear a bit of tappit banging and belt whine in that video. Seems like the car doesn't like magnatec until the engines hot, it wasn't cold in that video, around 70 on the gauge, but not at 90. The belt whine is actually the PAS pump that is nearing it's end, it really lets you know when its warm that it isn't happy. need to diagnose the issue, but it's likely it needs a rebuild.

In other news, I have recently uploaded some files to the downloads section, these are the press release documents from 1996 that I recently purchased, scanned at 1200dpi they are high resolution and a good tidbit for any 6n 16v nerd. unfortunately while I did scan the photo at 1200dpi, the file was too large for CP and had to downscale it 75% to allow an upload :unknw:. However I have all the original files and if the photo isn't big enough I have the original scan available upon request :D

until next time, drive safe :D

So replaced the fuel hose at the weekend as the smell of petrol was becoming ever stronger, old pipe had completely had it!

gkjs6Ln.jpg

new one is off a 6n2 GTI but exactly same fitment, popped straight on with no fuss

pZXgUmn.jpg

really need to give the engine bay a good detailing though looks yucky

took her for a half decent wash and wax, came up beautifully :D

V2Svx1b.jpg

and decided to dig out the old 4-2-1 and clean it up a bit, gave it a wipe down with degreasing wipes and a quick go over with brasso, didnt quite get the results I hoped for, so might attack it with some sandpaper and re-polish it!

k6OVZUW.jpg

Give it some high temp spray to protect it rusting and then wrap it:

wrap it good though or it will come over after a year or so. think you have to wet the wrap then wrap it so when it dries it expands and has a stretch fit. use proper metal tie wraps too.

  • Author

Thanks for the tip damunk, I hadn't thought about wrapping it tbh, was gonna have it shiny shiny!

give the engine bay a quick wipe down at dinner time, cleaned the wing lips and underside of the bonnet too.

haha it's already been dicussed! I would absolutely love to do ITBs to keep the injectors as they are easier to maintain and more fuel efficient and switch over to a digital ignition system so that I can map it how I'd like it.

Caarrrrbbbss lol

so spent most of today decorating, when I had alternative plans!

I did get a bit done though, swapped out the blue coolant sensor for a yellow one.

nAg0lWD.jpg

l90sQmg.jpg

it hasn't made any change the the lumpy idle when the coolant gauge is between the 1st mark and 90 degrees, will have to luck deeper into it. whent eh car gets to temp its perfect, and when its stone cold its fine, just when its slightly warm it turns lumpy :pardon:

had another stab at the rocker cover bolts, I can loosen 5 of the 9 the other 4 shown below are stripped out now :x

going to get doctor drill bit on it I think haha

couple of pic heavy updates, but finally managed to spend some quality time today, first on the list was re-fitting the spoiler.

started the day off looking like this

OZ9PeBe.jpg

gave her a quick wipe down and popped a centre for the wiring hole, stuck a bit of grease on for drilling

Fw9IY1U.jpg

nice clean cut

oipgGnP.jpg

deburred and stuck some paint on

DQ6jY1e.jpg

this is what the holes for, stuck a bit of grease on and popped it in

zWpStpp.jpg

pulled the cables through and got ready to bond the spoiler on, used this stuff

ZeGFtMy.jpg

put on with hopefully enough adhesive, didnt want to overdo it, supported with tape while it set

HIBWK6f.jpg

gGxcKMm.jpg

went and did some engine work while it set, came back a few hours later and removed the tape, looking as sweet as ever

Onto the rocker cover that has been a royal pain to sort thus far, every time I went to it to try and make progress with the bolts I came away frustrated.

today the stars aligned, just.

using a torx bit to literally broach the cap heads we got 3 of the 4 stuck screws out

XQNx0LR.jpg

the 1 still remained though

2mKvgLm.jpg

these are 5mm Allen Key cap heads, we initially broached it with a T40 I think it was, that just chewed it

broached with a 6mm Allen key, chewed it

we re-broached it with a 1/4" Allen Key, chewed it

attacked it with a large screwdriver, chewed it

re-broached with a 6.5mm Allen Key, chewed it

tried a 7mm Allen Key but it wouldn't take it, eventually we broached it with a T45 and somehow just managed to get enough bite to loosen it

it was not pretty hahahaha

0R5Zsas.jpg

I was quite happy by this point, and noticed that gasket on the shiny one looked quite worn, compared to the gasket that was on the one we removed, so I set to swapping them other, only the gasket on the shiny one wouldn't come out nicely, so left it in the end.

KORejKf.jpg

wCWNpoG.jpg

set to bolting on the polished cover with the new stainless steel hardware, I was quite cautious of the torque I was applying haha

kBgPUWu.jpg

and the finished product, absolutely looks the dogs dangleys, so happy I have finally been able to get it fit

all it needs is your manifold to set it off. Looks stunning mate. That last rocker cover bolt you should frame that

What size are the afh rocker cover bolt?

Nimal

Edited by madnemo

  • Author

haha I still have all the bolts, manifold still needs some work.

The 3 bolts on the far left side of the cover are M6 x 54mm (VW Spec) and the other 6 are M6 x 32mm (VW Spec)

I opted for M6 x 55mm on the long ones and M6 x 30mm on the rest all with 1mm washers and all stainless steel :)

ahhhh thanks

so actually connected the brakelight today and found a little intresting fact about the 6n bulbholders, they have 2 connector holes with connections on the back that arent used normally, figures I'd connect the spade connectors on the spoiler to them and guess what, it worked, they must act like a pass through. Pretty neat idea from VW!

pmnKpkq.jpg

EysmD10.jpg

Those connections are for towbar wiring, saves splicing into the main wiring loom :)

  • Author

Ahh thats cool to know, thanks Nige!

Why most of these didn't come from the factory like that instead of a factory extra I'll never know. They really set the rear of the car off nicely!

  • Author

I agree, car has felt so bare without it and when it's on it just looks right!

Really nice valver you have there mate, spoiler sets it off, good work
