Anyway, very nice valver, you seem to change little bits and pieces on it quite often, oh and the autotest looked a lot of fun, too. 

pic heavy update.. again

 

replaced temp sensor, thermostat, o-rings and clips ater experience both coolant leaks and temperature issues (OEM parts used) car drops temp quickly when light throttle or coasting, hot in traffic and under load, think the housing has broken, which is a typical problem, manageable for now!

 

also after many hours of scraping, swearing, blood and sweat I got all the old gasket out of the polished cam cover

 

all that work marred the surface a bit, so repolished that up

 

new"ish" gasket in and back on the car, still seeps bloody oil!!! valver heads be damned, i've tried all sorts and the bloody things still leak

 

sorted the anti roll bar bushes too, again, many sweat and swearing went into this job, the amount of pikeytech involved on the floor of works car park would make bear grylls proud

 

massive difference noise wise, but thats also coupled to fact im running higher profile tyres up front, as the 15's had worn a bit much, and not changing the tyres on those wheels until I get the others finished.

 

anyhow, my good marshaling buddy recently got a black 9n3 GTi, so at harewood at the weekend we snapped a few pics

 

fueled society held a meet there too, loads of nice motors and a few polo's there too :)

yeah they are what the 1.6GLX 1.4SE and 1.4 16v were fitted with from factory IIRC, took me ages to find a good set with the black stripes still all intact, most by now have been polished/rubbed off!

For some reason mine has standard ones but is a GLX?

no mate they are made by a company called Intra

 

Sooo, MOT time

 

not too nerve racking to be honest, I knew of one or two problems after a pre MOT check around that were'nt failable so was fairly confident it would pass, which it did :)

 

the outcome of the test was 2 tyres near legal limit which I knew about, brake line deteriorated front left which was a surprise but easily fixable (hello goodridge) and also rear left wheel bearing slight play, I had previously tightened it up but I was scared to over do it, so maybe not enough! however another easily fixable issue.

 

I was surprised the tester didnt pick up the knocking on the front right arm due to a worn bush, but it only happens in specific circumstances so maybe it didn't come up.

 

anyhow, tyres ordered, after a bit of looking and having a fairly tight budget I ordered Toyo T1-Rs, cheapest price was blackcircles.com at a shade under £185 delivered, in the end I got a set with C wet rating.

 

couple of days later tyres turned up and got them fitted on the wheels, then fitted on the car. 15x7 ET43 Intras, the fitment is fine, no rubbing or issue at all, visually they could do with spacing out on the rear.

 

The tyres themselves stick a damn sight better than the previous tyres I had, and that's just trying to scrub them in! Wet grip yet to be founded, I've been told they are terrible but haven't pushed it yet, noise wise they are noticeably louder and have a distinct rumble over a variety of surfaces, maybe when they are worn in and heat-cycled a bit they'll quieten up but its not horrendous.

 

can't wait to give them a good blat around with a bit of heat in them

Sold this back in May 2018, but just bought it back!!

 

car had been sat since I sold it so had collected quite a bit of damp and usual things that happens when a car sits. Got it back home and stripped the interior out and hung it up to dry, now to start on a few other issues, blowing exhaust and a really stiff clutch pedal!

Wow always good to get a car back will have to upload more pics and what plans have you got for it now 

 

I really regret getting rid of my first polo so I had to get another but this one is going to take some work as it was sat in a barn for around 8 years

Yeah I was quite lucky to have it offered back to me to be honest, but glad I seized the opportunity, she's not in need of as much work as yours by the look of it.

 

since getting it back I've;

 

• replaced the clutch and release bearing because it had a really stiff pedal, old release bearing had seized so replaced both.
• investigated some issues relating to changing gear as it felt like a stick in the mud, found that when the dog leg mount failed spectacularly it snapped a bracket and cable loacting housing so they are being replaced which I'm part way through.
• replaced the selector shaft seal while I had the box out.
• had a hole in the cat welded up.
• cleaned up most of the shmoo from the front of the engine and box (20+ years worth).
• stripped the entire interior minus the dashboard (26 fasteners in total 🤣).
• Identified areas of rust that require attention before they need heavier duty work.

plans immediately include

• replacing all suspension bushes for OEM or upgraded spec
• replacing suspension for ugraded units
• refreshing the calipers with rebuild kits, new discs and pads and braided brake lines
• MOT

future plan is to basically enjoy it for track days and possibly enter into the standard road going class at my local hillclimb which the regulations are quite strict in regard to modifications allowed and provide a great base to start motorsport and keep a manageable budget.
