Hi, my name's Phil and I've just joined to get some advice on modifying my MK4 6N, 1.4 CL. Looking to keep the standard appearence but give it a bit more punch and tighter through the bends.

Thinking camshaft and Polybushes to start.

Suspension mods for stiffness then. Polybushes might help if old rubbers worn. And lose any weight you can - sparewheel replaced with a can of goo?

What speed do you want to corner at?

Not sure a camshaft will improve mid-end punch without other mods to improve airflow in or out.

Is that an 8 or 16 valve 1.4?

I've driven Polo's for quite a while now but new to modifying them. Used to heavily modify Minis a long time ago but this is a different ball game.

I'd like to get some Superpro bushes but have been told they dont do them for the 6N Polo. Bit gutting as they seem to be much better than the rest.

Also thinking of dropping the suspension slightly. Dont want to deck it, just a subtle drop by way of some coil overs ? maybe ? Dont really know what the options are ? Would like to keep it looking pretty standard.

How fast I want to corner will depend on the moment. Hopping sideways with the Mrs splattered up the window would be the fastest but not the norm. ( I could ditch her to save some weight) It goes through the bends quite well already but it would be nice to feel a bit more in touch with the road and generally more in control.

Would a cam swap be better than the standard even without other breething mods ? Its an 8 valve AEX engine. Can you recomend a good fast road cam for the 8 valve ? I've spotted a Cat cam 7606136 that looks quite good.

I am thinking that a K&N and a decent exhaust manifold would help the flow to start with. Further down the line, I'm thinking of having the head off and opening up the ports. What about bigger valves ? or are the standard ones pretty good ?

I dont know what the standard hp output is for these engines but to get a few more responsive horses out of it would be good.

Thinking longer term still, would it be worth getting the rotating assembly lightened and balanced ? Would the Cat cam allow a fair bit to be shaved off the flywheel ? Cat say that they go for higher lift and a short duration. I'm guessing that will mean there wont be much overlap which may not suit a super light fly wheel ? But I wonder how light you could go with this cam ?
