Cars looking great dude. She cleans up good.

Saw the post about the cambelt cover, removing it won't bugger the timing at all, if you remove the rear section then you would have to remove the belt, they aren't hard to time up again should you choose to do it. Although access to water pump bolts is a bit tight. That's about all that makes the easy job a bit difficult. If I were you I would just paint the outside cover that clips on

Ok sure. I tried to remove the front plate with the 3 bolts but the middle bolt does seem to loosen when it's turned so I may just mask off the surrounding engine and paint as much of it as I can.

So,

A few days ago I had no plans of buying a new car for the next couple of years but then I saw an advert on here for a 100% original beige '86 breadvan for a good price and the beige got to me and I felt I had to rescue it.

These are the sellers photos but it should arrive tomorrow

morning so I'll get more then

It's been stood for 18 months so my plan is to do the few things it needs to get it back to near perfect condition then sadly I'll have to sell one of my breadys. But for now I'm looking forward to working on this one

So the old man spec bready that I've named 'Jeffrey' arrived this morning and I like it so much! The condition inside and out is pretty immaculate apart from a few spots of surface rust on the arches.

Then after a quick clean

My plan is to swap Lesley and Jeffrey around so he's in my aunt and uncles garage and I can get to work referbing it. My list of things to do so far is:

Replace the battery as it hasn't been driven in 6 years

Service it and check reliability

Grind down and paint the rust patches

Referb and paint the wheels

Maybe fit a cheap headunit and my spare front speaker at some point

I'm sure I'll find more as I go but that's all for now

Thanks

Love the beige! Looks a really nice original car, I hope you plan on keeping it like that :)

Thanks same here. As much as I know that it would look mad as hell lowered with some nice wheels I feel like it's too original to muck about with that so yes I think I do haha

Soooo...

Very little activity going on with the breadys recently due to me being in South Africa for a couple of weeks where the car scene was surprisingly good. Loads of modified cars and they still produced what was basically a mk1 golf rebadged as the "VW citi" so it was crazy the amount of mk1s I saw.

But since I've been back Lesley went through her service and mot fairly well with just a bit of welding required so my brothers been driving her

She's had a couple of hiccups in the past month but luckily we have good friends. 1 new battery and carbon brush later and all seems well.

Meanwhile Jeffrey has made his way to the garage and had a good clean polish and wax

The only progress I've really made however is grinding back some bubbled paint and rust ready to paint

Cheers

very impressed looking forward to your update.

Jddub's commitment to getting the paintwork right is really insinspiring. From what I've seen on these posts, preparation is the secret to a good finish.

I've only ever painted small areas on my polo, therefore, I have a lot respect for tackling a piece as visible as the bonnet.

Thanks a lot I really appreciate that. I'm by no means perfect and one day I'll hopefully get the whole car professionally resprayed but it'll do for now.

Not a lot is going on with either of the breadvans at the moment because of me starting 6th form but if all goes to plan I think I might be able to restore the beige one as an EPQ which would awesome as it would be killing 2 birds with one stone.

Hopefully I'll have a decent update coming soon.

Cheers

Sorry for the lack of updates but this is a big week for me because this Thursday I finally turn 17, and a bloody long 17 years it's been.

This meant that I spent this weekend doing some last minuet things before I start driving her.

I painted sanded back and painted the area surrounding the door handle as there was some nasty looking surface rust there.

Then I gave the interior and exterior a good clean

I also gave the carb a clean to try and stop a juddering problem on acceleration and it seems to have helped quite a lot and she starts up and idles much better now so ideal.

So now it's ready for me to start driving it and it's safe to say I'm pumped.

Hopefully I'll have another update soon.

Cheers

Soooo this died pretty quick lol. I dunno if anyone actually still reads these but thought I’d update. Since last time I passed my test so I’ve been dailying the blue one very happily. A couple AA calls more than I’d like but it’s meant it’s helped improve my knowledge. It’s had a couple of different looks. I lowered the front by 60mm which helps a lot. Then I put my golf wheels on first in silver

Then I had some e30 wheel trims over the top

Then I painted them gunmetal grey

And the most recently I designed and made some side decals at school for extra 80s goodness

Then with the beige one I finished restoring it and sold it back in September for a good price and I spoke to the new owners and it’s still running and looks by great. These photos were just before I sold it

Thats it for now. I’m hoping to do a 1.3 5 speed conversion soon but only if I can find a cheap engine. Time will tell.

Cheers

Just finished reading this thread and uv done an amazing job, good to see people out there still keeping these great little cars going without over modding them. Iv got a mk 2 polo country that iv had for about 3 years which iv restored and kept it original. Fair play to you mate and keep it up and keep us updated on any others you do

Thanks man I do appreciate it. The blue ones a bit of a dog really but I do what I can with the little money I have being 18! Hopefully once I start making some proper money I’m gunna shell out a bit on Lesley including a proper resto etc. Ah that’s lovely so clean! My cousin had a country as her first car so I think that’s what got me into them so much. Great lil cars

Na I like what uv done with it mate. There such a fun little car to have, loads of character and also turn heads too! Was looking at getting a golf at first but these are becoming a bit of a rarity now and have a unique look. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your next steps with your v dubs!

Yea I love mine to pieces, way more fun than a golf with a small engine too and like you say far more rare. I don’t intend to ever sell the blue one I’ll have to upgrade at some point but I’m hoping I can find somewhere to store it for a couple years
