Hi all

I'm wanting a little more space in the engine bay of our 6n. A friend gave me the idea of relocating the battery to the boot area.

I was searching on google and have seen a few people fit the battery behind the rear quarter trim. This seem like a good idea and will be hidden well.

They appear to be using motorcycle battery, as they are much smaller. Can anyone recommend me a small battery that will have enough power to crank the car.

Failing that I was thinking to maybe cut a hole in the boot floor and fit a battery box, but the only place I can see is the drivers side of the spare wheel, as the passengers side has the exhaust box.

in my old car i used a bmw e36 battery cable as bmw e36 battries are in the boot as standard and used a marine battery box fixed in my spare wheel. hope that helps.

For performance dynamics, you want it in the front. This will not be a handling or traction upgrade.. But if you must do it, look at batteries for japanese cars, as they tend to be smallest, particularly narrow/short with their capacity being in height.

The battery in a 1.0 Nissan Micra is tiny!

I actually use a Toyota Aygo diesel battery in my MK2, because the battery tray won't take a bigger battery than an 063, but i needed more cranking amps for 1600cc - the Aygo battery is taller so, with a modification to the wiper arm, that got me my upgrade.

You could use 2 (or more) smaller batteries wired in parallel to give you a 12v supply with an increased ah rating. This would enable the use of a couple of small 12v bike batteries that might be easier to hide?

Wiring wise I already have massively over kill wiring running to the bay from the rear quarter for the audio amps. I'm sure it's 0 AWG so I can use this I think. I can either make an under bonnet fuse board (like what's on top of the battery) or blank those off and use a new wire to the interior fuse box with a fuse link. I'm thinking it might need more grounding cables in the engine bay, but this will be apparent at the time I guess.

I have been looking at dry cell batteries. Does any one here have any experience with these? From what I have read they can last a long time. They are more expensive then "normal" batteries but if they will last longer then I can justify it.

I can't really put it in the spare wheel well unless it's a tiny battery as I refuse to use a car without the spare wheel and tools :) to me the empty drivers side rear quarter area is a lot better place (not that there are many)

As for weight distribution etc I have added a lot of weight to the front end with all the air on stuff etc so will probably equal out :)
