I have a set of 14" steel wheels that are 180mm from rim to rim. What are the widest tyres they would sensibly take ? Would 195's be a bit much ?

I have some 185 55s for them but wondered about going wider.

If I was going to band them, what is the important measurement for the offset ? Is it the outer face of the hub to inner rim or outer rim ? So, which rim would you move in relation to the hub face ?

What are you fitting them to? I run 185/55 tyres and have to use 5mm spacers to clear the suspension, and I clear the arch by literally 1-2mm and thats on a mk3 coupe

Ford were happy to send Mondeos out with a 195/55 on a 5in rim so i wouldn't worry.

I ran 195/60 on a 6in rim and the Scirocco behaved exceptionally well on them. Little could out-handle it.

6n valver had 14s. 185x55 are probably the best tyre for handling.

I think I'll stick with 185's. I forgot that the 55 is the aspect ratio, not the height of the sidewall.

185x55 is the closest to the original tyre diameter. If I went with a 195, then a 55 would be too big and a 50, if I could find one, would be too small. Maybe 195x55x14's for going on long runs to save on the fuel.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out what offset I can run a 6N with ? Are there any hard and fast rules about offset ?

I suppose the only rule is that the inner rim/tyre doesnt come into contact with the suspension or anything else.
