Engine specs help

Featured Replies

Hi Folks

Well I bought my daughter a 2006 1.4 16v Auto Polo for much cheapness from a local auction house and it turned out after much diagnosis that the compression was down on all cylinders so after much searching I got an engine from a breakers on EvilBay who assured me the BKY engine he was sending although out of a manual would fit my daughters Auto.... turns out he was wrong and now I'm stuck with an engine I cant use and need to sell on. Before anyone askes I've tried to get money back through EvilBay and its equally evil twin PayPain but they are a waste of space.

Anyhoo after some deliberation I decided I'd rebuild her engine so It is now stripped down trouble I'm having is trying to find specs for tollerances on bore and piston ring end gap etc
I've checked the bore dimension and will post the info later

Any info or help on rebuilding one of these 1.4 16v motor would be helpfull

Also good places to get parts as it'll be new rings and a new oil pump, full gasket set etc.....does anyone do an upgraded oil pump? as I've heard online these oil pumps aint that great.

Thanks in Advance

The only difference between the Auto & Manual BKY should be the flywheel??

Yep, same crank, and block casting.

Don't take the crank out of these aluminium cylinder blocks - if you do, the block will permanently distort and it's scrap.

I can assure you that the blocks are differet, at first glance they look the same but theya re not
At the position where the crank sensor mounts on the manual engine the is a casting that goes around the crank sensor and there is also some webbing on the back of the engine there are also differrnces on the front too.

This image shows the BKY auto engine around the area of the crank sensor also where the starter motor mounts https://goo.gl/photos/Ff18sa78vws5Rioj8

This image shows the same area on th e BKY manual motor, see the casting going over the crank sensor and the different webbing on the back https://goo.gl/photos/1D1TFMUUfaztjnNe9

The motor will mount in the car and the auto box may mount but there is no way to attach the starter. They are not interchangable or like for like

My advise is that if you haven't seen the motors side by side do not assume they are the same just because they are the same engine code

Well that's certainly different, I've had a look in the parts list and the part numbers for the blocks have different last letters, normally this just indicates a newer modification state, but in this case it's a totally different casing :(

It's long established for VW to use the same engine code for different castings. The casting type is determined by the gearbox code.

The auto casting in the picture looks like the one from earlier Polos (6n - both manual and auto), which has the starter motor on the back. This surprises me because the 9n used Golf spec castings and gearboxes - at least with the manual versions.

I didn't realise autos stuck with previous design, and i wonder how long for.

That interesting that it the same as the 6n Auto engines for older one maybe cheaper if I change my mind about rebuilding this one

I'm 99 percent sure a 6n2 1.4 16v auto casting will be the same - even if the engine code isn't. If it's a 1.4 8v 6n2 (AUD code) then you'll need to swap the pistons/rods over and the oil pump over, but otherwise that'll be the same casting, too.

Manual block may be the same casting but is likely to have the upper bolt thread alignment out, as i think the two upper bolts are a little closer together on manual versions. A tape measure and a good breakers yard should answer this.
