Hi lads, is there any electrical work required to fit Gti xenon's/ballasts into a 1.4 halogen. I have sourced the lights and going to buy them soon if the work load is electrically small.

There is an adapter loom 6N0971671 wiring harness adapter / connecting part / headlight but you might have that with your sourced units? if so it's a plug in job, but you might need to cut the panel to mount the ballast units, also to remain legal (UK) you'll need to fit the headlight washers and the automatic self levelling sensor on the rear axle beam

I'm not in the UK so I might get away without the self levelling as long as they are focused correctly. What u reckon? The lights are coming out of a Gti so should they have the wiring harness?

I'd check with your MOT equivalent people if the self levelling is a requirement ?

That adapter goes between the original H7/H1 headlight and the ballast unit, so that'll depend if when they remove the GTi lights they remove the adapter loom with it ?? it's listed @ 14€ ea. in Germany

The lights should plug right into your existing plug. The little loom part is an extension which makes fitting them alot easier because it's a longer wire. To clip the standard connector into the light without this extension you have to do it when the lights are fitted so you have to take the battery out unless you have small hands.

As for the levelling, if you don't have it fitted then they will work the same as the halogen ones with the little dial on the dashboard. The self levelling part replaces this dial, so the gti would have a blank where the switch is.

I have mine fired without the self levelling stuff because I don't have it, maybe one day :) my mot tester seems to miss the last few times :).

The black plastic front panel does need to be chopped a bit. When you take the old lights off, have a look at the flat piece underneath them, there is a raised section. It's not quite square so just cut away along the lines. I used strong wire cutters and filed off the edges to smooth it off a bit. This cut out is for the ballast which is bolted to the bottom of the lights.

make sure you fit new sidelights and main beam bulbs because it's a long job to change them later because you have to take the whole thing off the car again.

They are a straight plug and play install after you cut the plastic panel which is self explanatory,I'd also make sure the levelling clips in the headlights are not broke easy fix with replacement clips available on ebay

Sound job. In regards to the cable length issue, can I just clip the old cable and add a couple of inches to it? Heat shrink the lot then.

You could do, but for ease the factory ones would be better. Try to get them with the lights if you can as they are little uses on their own and not worth much to the seller.

Would the short loom be on a Gti already or is it an aftermarket part for fitting Gti lights to other models?

The loom is just an adapter for any 6N2 to fit the gas discharge, so as far as I know even the GTi would of had the adapter loom

Yes all 6n2 gti's had the loom it's just a extension to make installing easier you can plug the original loom from your car straight in but it's fiddly.

Hi lads, wow i posted this originally 2 years ago! Well i bought lights and didn't get the extra loom. Couldn't i just cut and extend the original loom to make fitting easier?
