Polo 6R - Headlight Problem (work as DRL, but not when on normally)

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a strange problem with the headlights on my 62 plate Polo Match (6R)

When I turn the ignition on, both headlights come on dipped beam as day running lights, no problem there. But when I turn the headlight switch on to dipped beam, the headlights don't come on. The instrument panel lights up normally, and you can hear a relay click when you switch from side lights to dipped beam, but the headlights don't come on.

So, I know the bulbs work, as the light up as DRL's, I've checked the fuses and all are okay, and I presume the switch is fine because I can hear a relay click when I turn them on.

Any suggestions or help before I take it to my local dealer?

Thanks

Pete

Are you sure it's the dipped beam that comes on dimmed? On the 6r's that I have seen they either have separate lights in the bumper or the main beam is dipped.

If the dipped beams are in fact dimmed then it sounds like a controller problem. If you have vagcom you can go into the central convenience unit and disable the DRL, then try the lights. If they work then either leave as is or try to re enable them and see if it fixes it.

You can also scan the various units for faults, it could be as simple as clearing them.

Hi. Sorry for the delay in responding.

Thanks for your help. The lights are definitely main beam dipped.

Just to clarify, when ignition is on and light switch is on 0 the main beam dipped are on as DRL. When I switch to side lights, the main beam dipped go off, and the side lights are on. When I switch round to normal headlights, nothing else comes on, just the side lights stay on.

I haven't got a VAGCOM cable, but will buy one. The ones I've seen on ebay state that they are for the Mk 3 & Mk 4 Polo's not the Mk 5. Could you point me in the right direction on what cable to get?

Thanks

Pete

As far as I know t. I'm not an expert on the version numbers etc. I do have a genuine cable and licence and I'm not TOO far away if you fancied a little drive. I would be happy to help out. I'm in tenterden TN26

It does also sound like it could be the switch itself, but the problem is they use can bus so only send a signal to the CCM to switch the lights. I do have a new switch here also so could swap them and see if it's that?

When they are in DRL mode, do the tail lights and number plate lights work too? If not then night driving is dangerous and this time of year, pretty much any time is night time :)
