Hello, so i was pulled for MOT expired and the officer took my address and said he will send a fine in the post ,, i stupidly drove the car into town and was pulled again because the windows were steamed up (need new pollen filter) and he thought i was smoking weed , which he confirmed i wasnt , so he did a check on my vehicle and said its all fine on your way!!?? what about my MOT? iv passed other traffic police with no issues ? why is this? and what can i expect if i get flagged again??

Don't drive your car anymore without an MOT. You said yourself you "stupidly" drove your car again. Asking what to expect when you next get pulled over again is stupid.

Use what could be more money on another fine and book an MOT

Always keep it above board. Costs more but keeps things simple

Surprised you evem asked if you get pulled again, could be that they let you off the original fine and buy you a mcd too

I read somewhere that they consider driving with no tax to be a worse offence than driving with no MOT. Which I've always found strange. I know people who have driven months without an MOT purely by mistake and never got pulled.

But if you know it is due then there is no excuse and if you think it won't pass because of an issue then that is even more reason for you not to be driving it on the public road.

However, the moral remains. Police cars have cameras on now, and their Christmas party budget has seen severe cuts, so you've got to play it straight these days.

i will be 100% honest i have just been laid off from work and dont have any money so cant afford to get the stuff sorting yet , i know i shouldnt drive it without mot its irresponsible,stupid.. etc.. so i will be taking the bus from now on but dont you find it strange i got pulled the second time and he ran a check and nothing came back?? i asked this question because the police officer that pulled me was making out that if i get pulled again show the slip that he gave me .. the way he worded it was strange,, like he could not encourage it but was saying that it will be fine if i just showed the slip .. his words were "its a offence to drive a vehicle with no valid MOT, but its up to you if you drive it" ... he didnt say get home and dont move the car untill its to the test station ... i still have not recived a letter btw and its been 3 weeks plus ???

And I've been fined for having fogged up windows before...

Have you checked yourself if your mot is actually still valid and it wasn't just a cock up from the police officer?

And now there's no tax disc it's a bit harder to remember it's due (unless you did strange SORN versus MOT start times to get them out of sync).

Perhaps the second officer felt kind, or didn't have data roaming on his mobile phone?

It's a £60 fine and no points versus £43 for the test (when car in good enough condition to pass obviously).

Oh yeah, and insurance usually states a get out clause of void when car not roadworthy and that can cost a whole lot more.

Sorry to hear youv'e been laid off. Yeah as dvderlm says no mot no insurance cover as they will state your car may be unroadworthy (they will use any excuse not to pay out) I know this as I have had this discussion with insurance companies before you know you have just rebuilt your project and want to take it to an mot station and the insurance company comes out with your car is not roadworthy as it hasn't passed/got an mot test and expect it to be trailered there !!!!

As part of my job I regularly drives cars with no tax, mot or insurance, not been pulled yet.

Couple of months back I had to take a mk2 granada estate for an mot, it had been in the unit for a few months getting a shed load of welding done and was covered in a couple of mm of dust with offensive statements about a mate written in it (this was all left on as a running joke with the mot tester about how I only bring him sheds to test). I had a police car sat behind me for part of the journey and they didn't seem interested in the slightest by this very shagged looking car being driven with no tax, test or insurance.

Maybe it was getting close to their lunch break

My dad used to always leave his MOT a month late each year so every 12 he got a free test! However I'm not even sure he ever kept a car for 12 years :-s

I've driven with no MOT due to being forgetful and I've always been ok, its a risk you take. I think its a little pious to get on your high horse and say it's dangerous he's a risk etc. There are plenty of dodgy MOT'd cars knocking about. However, it is nice to think all cars have the required paperwork but for me it's the penalties that keep my car MOT'd rather than a concern for public safety. Things can go wrong at any moment and the MOT is a little arbitrary as something could break as you pulled it off the ramps

It's also worth remembering that an mot test only means a car was considered safe for one hour out of the year, anything could happen on it during any point of the next 12 months that would make it an mot fail and probably won't be picked up till the next mot.

I don't think I've ever owned a daily that has passed it's mot first time, and I've driven a few of my cars without mot for a short time until I have the spare cash to do it. Anyone claiming that that is some sort of henous crime clearly has no idea of how pointless the mot certificate actually is. You could of been driving a car that wouldn't pass an mot for a large part of the year, is another couple of weeks gonna make it any less safe?

Memories of one of the fleet cars at my old work. They bought it brand new, and it went for it's first required MOT at 3 years old with well north of 200k on the clock, possibly nearer 300k.

The failsheet went on for pages apparently, but as far as the paperwork went, it was road legal the week before.

I know what you are saying, a current MOT really doesn't mean much other than the fact that (providing it has tax and insurance) it is legal to drive on the road. But there is nothing stopping VOSA pulling you and checking your car anytime of the year.

Regardless of the fact that the MOT does not say a car is safe all year round, (anyone who has had a banger before will know that anyway).

To drive without an MOT would be stupid. An MOT can be had for less than a tank of fuel. If he hasn't got an MOT because he knows something is wrong..then don't drive it till its done). Public transport is also an option. If you can't afford an MOT though you can't afford a car at all. Just saying

Whilst we're confessing our sins, I drove my Nissan across town the other day after it had been written off, so no MOT or insurance.

In my defence the recovery company refused to drop it off anywhere other than outside my house, and I needed to get it off the road but I wasn't about to pay someone to tow it 0.2 of a mile
