Is there a factory switched feed at the ISO plug on the mk2/f? Mine is a 1993 model.

As far as I can tell the switched wire is there (brown and red) but doesn't have any power. The other thinner wires are blue and white and grey and yellow which I'm sure is illumination.

The two unknown wires are the blue and white and the brown and red.

Any ideas?

The Brown/Red should be "S" contact supply from the key in ignition, Grey/Blue is the illumination & the other thin wire should be a Green/Brown wire that is the speed input from the speedo unit

Do you happen to know if the brown / red wire goes through a fuse?

Also, the speed input one seems a little too modern but I guess this era was when they would have first used the Gama feature.

The "S" contact feed isn't shown as being fused, if it's not working, you could pick up an "Ignition ON" supply from the heater blower switch.

I was surprised by the speed signal, I don't think many other manufacturers were doing that on similar age vehicles??

I guess this was the first year the polo had the speed signal ? I know Mercedes of these years defiantly had them for there stereos but this was a new feature and was a luxury at the time.

I'm sure the original radio would have been an early VW beta which would have been one of the first with the Gama feature from what I have read. Easily the most futuristic thing on these cars at the time I'd say :)

Back to the wire, if it's not fused I imagine it goes directly to the ignition switch? If so I will take that off and have a look inside. Not expensive new in the worst case . I would like to keep the wiring as standard as possible but I could always use a bullet connector straight to the radios wiring and avoid the ISO connector so I don't mess with it etc.

The battery live goes to the ignition switch and then out to the radio

Thanks Nigel, I will be taking the switch out and giving it a once over,. I will check for power at the S post first though. I imagine the contacts inside have got dirty etc so will open it up and have a go at fixing it. Failing that I will just get a new one as they aren't expensive.

Speed signals were in this era cars but mainly in Mercedes and some BMW at the time, they also had similar volume control systems. Looking at original pictures of the polo dash it seems some had the first gen BETA (I think?) radios, these would have had the Gama feature so I gues they put the wiring in place.

My question is though, where does the digital speed signal come from? As I'm fairly certain the cluster has a speedo cable. That said I haven't actually had them off yet so I could be wrong.

Yes the speed signal comes out of the speedo unit, so the mechanical cable must also drive an electronic sensor unit inside the speedo :)

See that alone seems like the most technical part of the car, and it's not even used for anything.

That said I wonder if there is anything we could use it for?
