I am sorry to be such a pain but me and my partner has recently brought a car of facebook and when my dad was driving it back the car clogged out and loads of white smoke came out of the exhaust and it wont start again after that?

I am after a cheap engine for the car

Whats the age, engine size of your current one?

If it is the Polo 1995 1.4L model from your profile it is a 1390cc, 60bhp (brakehorsepower) model. with an AEX or APQ engine code.

If the l stands for litres then it could be 60bhp or 100bhp 16valve model.

Sounds like head gasket failure, to me.

Providing that the car wasn't driven far after this 'event', it is worth investigating the problem, rather than fitting another engine that you don't know the history of - It may not be any better than the one you have.

Suggest that you first of all take out the spark plugs, checking the internal end of each plug as it is removed. - White smoke is normally the result of coolant in the combustion chamber(s) so you are looking for signs of coolant on each plug.

Next up is a compression test (you can get a reasonable compression tester from your local motor factors, or maybe on line.)

With the plugs removed, spin the engine on the starter for a few revs in order to throw out any coolant that is in the cylinder(s).

If the compression pressure is low on (say) two adjacent cylinders, then it is likely that the head gasket is the culprit.

If he gasket is the cause of the problem, you are likely to need to get the head face re-surfaced before refitting it.

Even if you have to pay a garage to do this work for you, it is likely to be much cheaper (and possibly more reliable) than a second hand engine.

NOTE: If you do use a garage, make sure that you know something of them, ideally by recommendation from someone who you know and trust - There are a lot of cowboys out there!!
