I want to run a rev counter in my mk2 instead of this massive clock. However, due to the rarity of coupe s', can I run a set of mk1 golf gti clocks in my mk2? Does it connect straight up or need some fettling?

The whole unit would probably be quite a bit too wide. You might be able to swap just the rev counter into the cluster though.

Although, if you look at your speedo, you'll probably see some little red marks on the face, these give you a red line for the first few gears.

Polos have rounded corner square face Motometer rev counters, as do Mk1 Golf GTI,

But pretty sure Golf have VDO rev counter. MIght be the same dimensions as Motometer.

I think they have two gauges at the bottom for oil temp and fuel tank, so some ingenuity may be required in a transplant.

From my notes, Mk2 Polo cluster is 255mm wide, Mk2 Golf MFA cluster is 260mm wide so could be made to fit.

Same layout, the speedometer goes to 120 instead of 100 and the different tyre size may affect the calibration, but it may be possible to do some surgery and swap the speedometer unit over.

I'd hold out for some Polo ones. I believe some people have fitted MK2F clocks, too. I don't know what's required to fit those.
