What grinds your gears

Featured Replies

Yep, that's the one.

I'm in the process of getting back on a bike and it really makes you realise how bad most people are at roundabouts.

I was doing a right turn on quite a big roundabout when my instructor came round and was suprised to find me stopped dead in lane. The only explanation I gave was "He's fucking lucky I'm on a 125 and I've got you to calm me down"

She then reminded me that she's not there to calm me down, but wouldn't lend me her 600 to go and find the old idiot who'd gone straight across the roundabout without even moving his eyes off the point 2 inches above the top of the steering wheel.

Since this is in the club house I'm going to try and keep my rants off the topic of cars. Lots of things grind my gears though, I'm quite a grumpy old man at the ripe old age of 28. Facebook - Face

  • Driving with front fogs on when it's not foggy!! I live and work a bit out in the sticks so there are very very few street lights so are blinding!

Also, another one:

When someone is crossing the road in front of you (very slowly), looks right at you and doesn't speed up, essentially meaning you have to swerve to avoid them.

Had this twice in the past two days. The first, I barely had time to react, let alone honk at them. The second time, the honk gave the girl (not even a teenager yet, I might add) the biggest fright.

The audacity of them. Look right at you and just carry on regardless!

Yeah, hello? I'm driving a big hunk of metal at 30mph that could easily kill you, maybe don't dilly dally like a d**k?

This used to be a roundabout, and it was referred to as "kamikaze roundabout" for a reason. It's no longer a roundabout though, so I've started referring to it as "kamikaze clusterfuck", which is pretty appropriate.

If you're coming from the right, you have two lanes. The left lane can go left OR east, and the right lane can ONLY go north.

If you're coming from the left, it is the exact opposite. The left lane can ONLY go left. and the right lane can go right OR south.

Naturally this confuses the hell out of everyone. Thanks, Wigan Council.

I love how people have the time to beep the horn when someone's like cut them up, I'm more worried about not crashing Probably be less accidents if people tried the brake instead of horn

Transit van, 21 foot trailer, on strange territory, I started to get near the roundabout and the satnav shit its pants.

I ended up going through the bugger 5 times.

The council obviously thought that doing that would be cheaper than installing traffic lights and getting rid of the mini roundabouts.

Glad I didn't have to do my test round there.

similar one by me but it doesnt really bother me, the lanes are marked well enough. I've went the wrong way once being in the wrong lane but since I've been fine and its reduced congestion by quite a bit

Dipstick windscreen fitters !!

This afternoon tried removing the scuttle panel cover over the pollen filter on the Octavia, only to find both halves of it bonded to the bottom of the windscreen !!

the amount of ad's i see "fully rebuilt "& "total rebuild"

then when you ask , oh any proof that you spent many hundreds rebuilding the engine?? oh yeh prev owner says this n that , last guy was a vw tech and it turns out its had a rocker gasket and a new fuel filter

How everything that comes up for sale that I would actually like to purchase is always so far from me.

It seems so many ClubPolo members live at least a few hours drive away... :-(

Pony express dude, seems to work well on some other forums, get to know people at shows etc. who are in different parts of the country and get them to collect them for you then collect off them at the next show etc. works if you're not in a rush for parts mind...

"Fully adjustable suspension" is one that gets me, usually means "cheapest coilovers I could find on eBay". Which by the time someone else buys the car they are probably seized solid so not adjustable in any way

Young guys these days seem to eat up everything previous owners say, I've seen adverts for mk2f Polos stating they have GT bumpers, GT brakes, GT this, that and the other thing when it is all just standard parts that came on every Polo. When asked the usual response is "that's what the previous owner told me".

I hate when people say

"good bits...lowered on Ta technix springs and shocks 60/40" I am sorry but you have made the car worse. I would rather standard suspension than that!

Some then proceed to say "Very solid car, ONLY has a bit of rot in the sill and rust bubbles round the arches. but its an easy fix" That is the biggest put off for any car buyer and they say yeah its only a bit of rot...yet somehow this doesn't make it as a bad point but a shit ebay induction kit replacing the air box which is now gone is a good point.

The price of Polo GT's

I know there is no right or wrong when it comes to pricing these and a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay. But I always use my GT as a benchmark. It was £700 when I bought it back in 2013, genuine GT, around 110K miles, totally standard apart from clear indicators and a DXK gearbox, almost a years MOT and overall a nice clean honest car.

Now some of the latest ones I've seen for sale are,

£600, genuine GT, no MOT and needs an ECU

£800, genuine GT, SPI engine fitted, pretty rough, some MOT.

£950, unsure if genuine or not, looks a bit rough, bolt on arches and has some MOT

£1100, genuine GT, 5 months MOT, bit rough, needed a fair bit of welding at last MOT

£1200, GT conversion (engine only), clean looking car with a fair bit of MOT

What is up with those prices? Standard non-GT/G40 Polos are struggling to shift for around £500 with MOT. With that in mid how can the above prices be justified?

Totally agree with this ^^^^^^^^

Since I bought my GT for peanuts £300 in Sept 2015 (utter stroke of luck!!) I've kept an eye on prices and some have been ridiculous, I'm sure I remember you saying Kwijibo about them at the time being bad!

But if I'm honest with the work that's gone into mine to get it back to a good standard and kept standard I'd be in the range of £1k+ easily if I were to sell mine. (not happening)

Also, I'm sure parts with a GT tag on them are horrifically priced as well because of the price people are asking for the cars!

Thing is its a desirable model and compared with the prices of g40s and 1l 1.3 it fits in the middle

The ones you posted sound more like fraud the description is so misleading

Hmm, since discovering this club and looking for a mk2F (about 2014) GT's have been about 1000 give or take a 100 quid with a full MOT etc.

Maybe this is just what happens, people call them classic all the time and more and more people put high prices till the point that everyone does and before long it's a £2000 car!

I wanted a 106 rallye s1 and still really really do! Proper drivers car, no aids, 100hp 1.3 8v, red carpets, lairy stickers...always had a soft spot. They were going for about 1000 and up to almost 2000 for an exceptional one. Now that has literally doubled everywhere i looked. Over 2000 for a shitbox and I've seen them at 4k+.

I can't say I'll ever have one at those prices now. At the end of the day...it's a 106.

Some people's opinion of the police.

For example I am a "member" on a pretty large car group based around Birmingham because I went to a meet once, every single day is someone being pulled for something, or moaning about a speeding fine and that,

The amount of times people call the Police "scum" or "fuck the police" or whatever these days is mad.

Or why are they pulling me over for my window tints when there's rapists and murderers to be caught.

Well, their job is to enforce the law, if you choose to break that you need to accept that you can be caught and prosecuted, it's your choice, nobody forces you to do 40 in a 30 or drive like a bellend and get pulled over.

Do you really think they just give a police officer a car and say "just go do what you like today, look for a murderer, target polo members for philj kits being declared, whatever"

They seem to get so pissed at a specific police officers. Like it's their job, they're doing as they're told to do by their superiors,

And hey, here's a crazy bit of common sense, maybe if you were actually legit or not being a bellend creating petit crimes or easily solved things (unlike rape, murder, robbery etc) MAYBE there would be more resource available to work on "proper" crimes unlike your tinted windows or limiter banging your car at 2am in a housing estate.

Utter fuck tards, you'll be the first to go crying to the police when someone's stole your car or punched you in the face, grow up, and, (I use this very bravely this day and age) and use some common sense! Dicks.

Well said, i won't lie I've complained about them from time to time when i was pulled for silly things (numberplates ect) but at the end of the day there just doing there job like :)

Modern cars being too clever for their own good...

My girlfriends Audi A3 failed it's MOT on a couple things, one of them being a number plate light bulb. So today I went and changed both number plate bulbs, turned the lights on and neither work. Spent the next half hour doing 'old school' fault finding when I had a wild idea....plugged in the Ethos and found there was a code for them being blown. Code cleared and now they work! A quick Google search after shows I'm not the only one to be fooled by this and people have even gotten to the point of stripping down the entire tail gate to find nothing wrong! Others have been charged £50 by a main dealer to reset the code!

When you're trying to sell something, be it a car or a phone etc, and people have nothing better do than tell you it's not worth what you're asking for it.

For example, I've currently got my E46 323ci up for sale and I was asking on the E46 Owners page what people reckon it's worth. Long story short, the cons are that it's in an auto and has damaged paint. The pros are that it has M3 rep body parts and loads of gadgets, OEM sat nav and OBC that was an expensive extra, heated electric leathers, cruise control, climate control.

I had some guy pop up on the Facebook page and tell me I'd be lucky to get £400 for it because it's an auto and you can supposedly get a clean 330ci for £1000 now. A quick search on eBay and the owners club page for sale posts shows most 330ci's for around £2/2.5k and a couple of breaking or spares 330's for £1k. But this guy was absolutely adamant my car is worth £400, despite everyone else on the thread mocking his opinion.

It's not necessary and potentially puts people off your car because someone's being openly negative about it.

As it stands I've got a guy coming to view with £1k in his hand tomorrow.

Yeah some people talk utter shite matt. I do agree on the polo scene people are overpricing them a lot though

Good luck with the sale as well matt, don't let it go for much less!

Struggling to even get £1k for it at the moment John. That's grinding my gears as well! I'd get more out of it if I had the time and space to break it, the sat nav and the dvd player etc go for £200 each on eBay at the moment.

But as ever people will tell you it's worth nothing.

Yeah it's hassle breaking. I would advertise on other sites..it's only ever going to be the enthusiasts that tell you it's worth 12p.

A lot of them are there just to put others down because "one time they got the same model for £500" and not bringing up the fact they probably had to shed a load of money repairing wheel bearings and bad bodywork etc.

I'm guilty of telling people that their car isn't worth what they are asking, but it is mainly on the mk1-3 Facebook page and usually it is an absolute shed that is priced at more than what I bought my 3 early Polos for combined.

But Matt I agree whoever is telling you that is just speaking rubbish, everyone wants an E46 now as they are fast becoming the cheapest way to BMW ownership so as a result prices are staying strong. Early 328 manuals are still changing hands for around £1k up here and I've seen late 330Ci models upwards of £5k.
