Polo Gt coupe steering rack upgrade.

Featured Replies

Hello

Was wondering if anyone has thought or converted there mk2f steering rack to a power steering rack. Anyone know if anything like a lupo or more modern polos would work or not?

Just feel with the steering far too light once moving. The roads being so god damn awful and every bump moving the steering wheel just doesn't feel nice personally. Kind of dangerous especially when I hit a big puddle moving over for a oncoming tractor.

Any suggestions please.

some folk fit corsa elec pas columns on , i dont really see the polo needs pas , part of the billy basic charm of a old vw

I drive down single track and a few hundred yards of unmade road daily most is either water or pot-holed in my GT coupe and have never had an issue with not having power steering. I've also owned old corsas and the steering would be far too light for a polo. Its designed for a car 200kg+ heavier. But obviously thats personal opinion.

I can only see fitting PAS on a polo will actually make it worse.

However as the title says about a GT, are you sure your steering damper hasn't given up the ghost?

Remember the story of the Fiat Seicento - Fiat didn't want to offer PAS. Nor did they need to. They bodged on a compromised unit 'because girls wanted it' - but the PAS was heavier than the manual rack. Many customers, mainly women, never test drove a manual rack, so they had heavier steering as a direct result of their ignorance.

Is it a characteristic then that as I go to put full lock on it feels like the wheel wants to run away onto full lock after a certain point?

I have just come from a mk5 r32 so I point it and it goes. Unreal handling. Just feel this would feel lot better with firmer handling, by this I mean less I put back from the road. Maybe the damper u say maybe gone. I'm quite new to all the running a of this car just yet. Need a play just needed advice.

they're very very much differant to modern sporty car

maybe check the lower arms are in good condition and consider some arb blocks and have the tracking checked , otherwise yeah they're a bit like that , its a 1970s designed shopping car not a sports car

Yeah I appreciate that. Just if I'm wanting to alter the car to how I want it. I am wanting people's opinions on how I might get what I'm after if it's beneficial or just best to leave it.

I've always noticed if these are lowered and you don't fit ARB blocks the steering doesn't feel great. So I'd consider fitting ARB blocks if you're lowered and see if that improves things for you.

Cheers kwijibo . Got a few questions for you mate. Will PM you.

The spring rate on the steering is there due to the weight of the car on it, and yes, when you get near lock, the weight is balancing on the edge of the tyre so it goes lighter again from there. This is accelerated with more castor geometry.

The R32 is the weight of two of these cars. Literally.
