6n2 1.9 tdi conversion

Featured Replies

Hi all. This is my 1st post . I'm going to be fitting a mk4 golf 130 or 150 gt tdi engine into my 6n2 1.4 tdi. I've been toying with ideas of turbos remaps and gearbox changing for the 1.4 but I want to go a big step further. I've done some research and seen some pictures of other conversions but I want my own questions answered. Does anyone have any experience in doing this? I'm going to be going all in. I'm changing the hubs, breaks etc. I know it's going to be a ball ache but I'm going to be prepared for the work needed in advanced. I'm going to be using the gt tdi 6 speed box drive shafts so what do they need shortening by? What engine/gearbox mounts will I need or what mods do I need to do to the original ones? I work for a vw garage so I've got the know how and equipment to do it. I just need a few pointers so I can be well prepared so when I do the job I can get it in quicker [emoji4] .

Thankyou for reading and for help in advanced.

Don't take the following as advice, just thoughts in my head which may or may not turn out to be utter crap.

Anyway am I correct in thinking the diesel 6n2 uses an 02* type gearbox as does the mk4 Golf diesel? If this is the case couldn't you, A: just swap the engine over from the Golf and bolt it up the gearbox already in the Polo? or B: use the Golf's gearbox but just swap the driveshafts over assuming the drive flanges are the same on both 'boxes?

Yeah I don't think the actual mounts will be a bad fit but it's where they will be in position with the extra width of the 4 cyl tdi engine. And depending on if the drives haft joints will swap over as the polo cv joints won't fit the golf hubs. Only issue with the polo box is the engine will eat through its shorter ratio gears and top end will be lower and less fuel efficient. Thankyou for the input :)

For the 6 speed you can look at 1.8t conversions, they all seem to have cut a notch into the chassis because it's a little wider then the gap. From a few I have looked at they seem to have chopped the engine mount brackets off the golf etc and welded them to the polo int the right place. That said the mounts for the tdi polo are very similar.

Best bet is to get the engine and box offered up to the bay that way you can what needs moving etc.

There is also the weight issue, the 4 cylinder tdi is heavy so you will need longer springs etc. Golf 3 diesel shocks will bolt on

As for driveshafts, again it's best to get the engine, box and shafts hanging in the bay then measure things up. As far as I can tell the golf tdi shafts are thicker so perhaps smaller engined versions would be better.

I think this conversion will be awesome, I have thought of it for a while but I'm lazy so stuck with petrol engine.

Hi dixy. Thanks for your input. Yeah I've been reading a post in the projects section of a 1.9 tdi conversion. Seen that they had cut into the chassis for the gearbox to fit. The engine mount looks as if it will bolt straight on so fingers crossed it will be an easy fit engine wise.

I've got fk adjustable coilovers so the weight won't be an issue suspension wise. The more I look into it the more confident I'm getting with it.

Yeah I'm really keen to be getting it done now. Just waiting for the right time to get going.

Going to look up wiring diagrams soon to match up some of the wires I'll be cutting away from the mk 4 loom.
