Lowering room mount caps mk2f

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have been looking at the lowered top mount caps but haven't found any listed for the 86c

I have a spare set for the 6n which are the smaller type, does the mk2f use the same top mount caps as the 6n? Or are they more similar to the earlier golfs (IE bigger type)

I'm looking at these because I would like to bring the front down very slightly. The cheaper springs I have found on eBay are at least 40mm drop for the front.

Am I being silly trying to drop it by such a small amount? If so can any one recommend a good "performance" level of drop?

I have seen 60/40 mentioned a few times but I think that's a little too low. I am just trying to bring the front down to the same level as the rear but still be able to not worry about speed bumps etc

Thanks

Use standard G40 front springs maybe?

How much lower than standard polos are g40 springs?

I've never seen any specific lowering top mounts for the 2F although when I just bought mine I was hearing lots about them, I've also heard people using shallower spring plates so the top mount sits lower but whether these are homemade or from another model I have no idea

I don't think the top "caps" from the 6n lower it at all but they look nicer as they sit flush to the body. I found them nothing but hassle though

Sorry if that's all a bit confusing. Some people refer to the top caps as the top mounts and vice versa. There's different terminology for all suspension parts it seems

The part I'm talking about goes between the top of the spring and the bearing.

I removed the top cap and pulled the shock down enough to get a look and they are the same. They look as if they are at least 10mm lower.

The problem I had with them on the 6n is that the top rubbers touched them and made steering very difficult so I took them off. The mk2 top rubber is different so looks like it will clear.

The g40 springs sound good, where can I get these from? And as above do they lower it or are they just "Stronger"

Phil j used to sell the smaller plates that sit above the spring which lower it another 10-15mm, dont know were he got them from but i cant find them anymore, fk automotive sell or used to sell a lowering cone shaped rubber top mount, which I've heard are rubbish and dont work.

The plates the Philj used to sell were very soft. So much so the solid TA dampers try and push up through them.

G40 springs are 25mm lower than standard. But whether you can still get them now I don't know.

The top plates (whatever they are called) are made by fk automotive and where listed for the 6n. I bought them maybe 3 years ago so may well have been discontinued by now. They seem very solid at least as solid as the OE ones.

I will look into the g40 springs, but I imagine they are main dealer only.

Thanks guys.
