My long going 6n

Featured Replies

So I've been on here for a while now, had a 6n since I was 17 and slowly built it up whilst driving stupid miles in it every week. I thought I would start a build thread with what I remember and what pictures I have from the beginning to now, with hope of finding some more ideas for my polo!

So it all started 6 ish years ago, I bought my first car from Swansea.. a completely bog stock standard 1 litre 6n with our power steering. Looked like and old man's car but not one shit was given at 17 [emoji23]

Bought some real cheap alloys and some coil overs, clear indicators/side repeaters and rear tinted lights and a badge less grill and I was away!

Time went on.. after buying a sub, plastering it in stickers, crashing into a mate and having to repair my car, driving like an absolute idiot and everything else most 17 year olds do I came across a bit of money. I had the intention of keeping the polo, bought some angel eyes for her and put my private plates on

Then I decided that my 1 litre polo was way to underpowered for me, and not knowing much I went out and bought a completely bog stock standard 1.4 8v 6n (which to be fair probably aren't much quicker [emoji23])

So again I bought some new coil overs and swapped the orange lights over with my old 6n

I then thought it would be a good idea to paint my steel wheels white which looked pretty sweet until they started going tacky and dirty

Then I went through gearbox problems, I did around 4 gearboxes in a matter of 2

15000 miles or less!

I then moved away so had to park the car up for a while until I came back, at which point I was then jobless so was unable to put it back on the road.

Eventually got a job working in a body shop, which was convenient as my lacquer had come off the roof and bonnet. So bought some 16v bumpers and got straight into prepping the car for some paint

After many sleepless nights I finally decided I wanted it to stand out, so it was going yellow! (Not the best decision now I look back but it looks good enough)

This was just as it was put back together, this is when I decided I needed to spend some money on the polo

Went and bought cupra red and black seats, and some porsche teledials (which looked shocking in black)

Nice coat of battleship grey made them alot nicer

Very unfortunately a really nice polo was crashed, which I had the engine from

I went out and bought another car to drive around in as mechanically I don't really have much of an idea with conversions or anything for that fact, I'm not the brightest with it all but will give anything a go!

So I was all set with my spare car I had all the time I needed, my polo in a container and the 1.6 16v 6n2 GTI engine all ready to plug and play. I started on my polo, got it down to the shell, engine out, full interior out and full wiring loom! Then took the engine out of the gti and put it into storage, stripped the wiring loom out and put it straight back into my shell!

I obviously hit alot of problems, being as clueless as I was with everything.. but it was going fairly well

Then engine went in, it started and run.. no knocks no bangs no wheels fell off and no bolts went missing whilst driving so all was great! Started to build it all back together ready for the road!

She was all done and ready to be driven, just in time for the summer

Put a nicer set of wheels on her, ronal ls alloys I believe they are..

Then conversion made a huge difference to power, and I've had some amazing fun in her since the conversion

But now, it's off the road again due to an alternator and starter motor problem

d3c72fa499d09dcb9d03f536189b352c.jpg

I have decided to spend a few months on it before I put it back on the road again though to tie up loose ends. it needs arches rolling for more lows and some more paint to solve the start of a rusty arch, wheels need a refurbish, I'm thinking of a roll cage and boot build, need to put my de-cat after market exhaust with manifold on and will be looking for engine modifications (although I am clueless where to even start!)

Anyway this is how far I've got in all that time, and alot more left to do.. I would have more photos but a majority I've lost due to broken phones. I will try keep posting as I go along! Cheers guys hope you enjoy [emoji106]

  • That 6n is the one I based mine on with colour! I seen it on the Internet and it was the decider for the paint haha. Was really happy about how it came out!G40 motor would be great in there I love the

What a transformation. Was the original color canyon red?

Loved that! I remember a German yellow 6n which did the rounds years a go.

Found it, surprised it was still on the net!

Love the yellow, and love the progress you made, now all you need to do is G40 it, and a 'full' custom respray in yellow. 8>):spiteful:

Looks fantastic that! I love that you went yellow too...I would never think the polo would suit it so well. I thought you would have sprayed the bay before the engine went in though lol

Hats off sir

I've always thought the 6n pulls off yellow so well, just a shame we never got them in yellow over here as standard.

Hope you get it sorted soon and continue to have fun :)

thats a lot of work gone on there, but the outcome looks great! nice one :)

I do believe it was canyon red from the factory but I can't remember the paint code.. at the time of doing the conversion I had the idea of painting the centre of my wheels and parts under the bay in the canyon red which is why I didn't paint they bay (realising later on that I should have while it was out lol)

Been a long time doing this, but it's never really broke the bank which I'm happy about but now I think it needs money thrown at it!

G40 motor would be great in there I love them, torn between tuning the gti engine (which I'm pretty sure doesn't get much gain?) Or just doing a better conversion!

And it does need some proper paint to finish the body work off, this was the first time I'd painted a car, and although the paint is nice there's parts I can't stand to look at where they have stone chips or the rusty bubbles coming on the arches [emoji23]

GTi with chocolate boxes.... I'd had a G40 with the ATV box, ok the chasis is heavier but you'd have a lot more potential with it.
