Hello there, I have had my 1998 vw polo 1.4 for about 5 years now (only one break down)

Pedal box went at 84000 other than that it works like a dream. It's going in for a total respray in the holidays so I am very excited.

I have had a few technical issues that have been resolved (some not) and I'd like to share them here so if they can be of any help to anyone else then that's great [emoji1]

This is her before. The respray and during,

I'll be getting her back tomorrow, was supposed to be tonight but there was more work than anticipated so she is in for an extra day.

(She is having a respray)

At 84,000 miles I had the pedal box snap on me (where the clutch is housed) other than that the only three small issues were

The drivers side lock broke on me at 72,000 luckily found a second hand one, took it to bits replaced the broken part so was able to keep the same key.

Then I had what I thought was an electrics melt down, the oil and hand brake lights started flashing on and off on the dash board while the needles would sporadically go up and down despite the car driving perfectly.... After I traced it back on the Haynes manual it transpired that a little clean of the hand-break electrical plug solved this. At no expense other than some Que. tips (it was very gunky) and finally

Bloody water coming in the drivers side back foot well, I suspect it may be the membrane and this is my next task as all seals seem good and would welcome any feedback

The thing that really gets to me is when I got an online valuation... It's less than half the price of my I phone [emoji50]whaaa? I just don't get how a car can be less than a phone.

Anyway she is very special to me, she was passed down and was my first car. I often get laughs when I say I want to keep her for a minimum of ten years. The way I see it is people will loose all the time on depreciation.... And as far as I know this car is worth £200 squid. So a bunch of new tyres an oil change and a full tank and I have spent what the car is worth lol.

So with the whole loosing depreciation thing, what I would loose on depreciation with a new car I choose to spend on keeping mine going... Is that enough justification [emoji13] he he

That is a fantastic attitude to take towards your car. Like you say people loose so much on new cars, and it seems more and more young people have a new car on finance these days. Taking interest and depreciation into account they must loose a fortune over the 3 years they have the car.

You'll easily spend less keeping this car going for the next few years. Keep up the good work :)

My brother is 18 and spent 7grand on a second hand fiesta. Here he is not even two years in and regretting his purchase. But the beauty of it is... I receive so much flack of him for not "just buying a new one"

What I love about these cars is that they are machines... Machines!!! They are grimy cog turning red blooded machines, not a computer. Oh no my key doesn't work... £200 for a new one... Not a problem £50 at timpsons for a new one.

Oh no my electric window won't go up... The mechanic will have to tear the door apart to find the problem... Not a problem with "keep fit" windows remember the wd40 in the boot? Boom!

They are just great and you could push it into any garage and they will take a look (for free). Wait your car is basically a computer ??? £50 quid to plug your computer into my computer. For "diagnostics"

Side note "this anger is directed at my brother and the pick up guy who said she should be scrapped" I'm sure your lovely half car half computers are wonderful [emoji12]

I feel the pain sadly of having a newer car and regretting it afterwards. Had my polo 6r for over a year now and I'm itching to give it back

Older cars are so much better to drive too, my new one pretty much drives for me and it makes me complacent which is more dangerous. Feels like I'm bloody driving a computer sometimes!

Not all lost though I have a mk2f bready too which stops me getting so depressed that I want to drive the new one into a Lamp post.

Nice car btw and welcome to the forum! Seems you have had very little to complain at your polo for, it has done you well! Look forward to seeing the new fresh paint :)

Couldn't agree more. Fixing the Polo is a pleasure, whenever something goes wrong with the Aygo, I just get annoyed.

I don't want any more new cars...

What type of wheels have your got in mind? (Don't say round ones lol).

Absolutely no idea, I know nothing about wheels so was going to post for some advice, I was of the mind (I'll know when I see them) but it's trickier than I first thought, I like the design of the wheels you can see in the background [emoji4]

Yea I'm the same, have a look on here in the build threads and google. I google searched 6n Polo Euro, to get some ideas from around the world

I want to stick with the same size I don't want to go down the route of tearing the car apart to accommodate them, I just want a simple switch. I don't want to lower the car either as my commute involves loads of speed bumps.

I also want to change the indicators to clear, parked up next to a polo that had that (same make and model) and it looked really smart [emoji1]

I reckon the 16v wheels would look good, I had some but my 16v was lowered too.

Big problem, when he took the roof seals off they disentigrated in his hands.... (I knew they were bad when I lifted them before, I could feel the metal inside turning to powder) the issue is is £114 for a new pair.

I'm not prepared to pay that.

Does anyone have any idea where I can get cheaper ones ???
