The rear of my polo is really low compared to the front. I'm thinking the rear rubbers have perished.

I had a look on eBay and have found a set, doesn't list the 86/c so want to make sure.

Also, is there an upper rubber part between the spring and the "cup" part? Can't see one and don't remember if other polo have this

Think they are for Mk4s.

Search for 803412141a or 861513275 which are top and bottom bumpstops and you should find a diagram of the shocks.

I found the diagram and your right it doesn't show an upper rubber Spring mount. Number 20 is listed as Spring disc there is also a lower Spring disc.

Would worn bump stops make the rear lower? Or is it more likely to be worn springs or shocks?

No, I think lower bump stops just prevent extreme travel collision of strut hydraulic with mounting.

Top bump stops prevent nasty vibrations through car. Not good if they have collapsed.

Could be worn springs (or crumbled away at top or bottom).

Push down on the back of the car and let go (or stand on the bumper, then jump off).

If it bounces more than twice then shock absorber.

I don't know whether it will be any help or not, but due to the cost and available to me as a bus fitter, I use Dennis Dart (small bus) shock mounts on both my polos. Never had a quible with them and they fit perfectly whilst be very heavy duty as designed to last on a bus. I'll see if I can find some and send a link

The rear damper top mounts are only about 15mm thick and they just don't crush. They hardly wear at all. I've had a few pairs off old MK2s and it's been hard to select the best pair amongst them, as there's been little in it.

The spring top seats are rubber but they are literally just a few mm's thin.

I think your height problem lies elsewhere.

Have your dampers got multiple spring seat grooves?

I checked with the bounce test and it seems fine it's about 1.5 bounce and the car rides nicely over bumps, it's just it looks like the back has been lowered. This might be okay for some but I usually lug around heavy stuff and or people so having it low at the back isn't ideal for me.

The previous owner had the front top mounts changed so this will make the front higher so I figured maybe there where rear ones that I could change.

Having looked at new shocks I see it comes with the upper rubbers but as above they don't look like the type that squash.

The shocks on there just have the one lip for the spring plate, I did see some shocks which used a thick circlip and had 4 or 5 grooves and hoped I had those but no luck.

The springs themselves seem in good shape although I haven't taken them off to check properly.

Could the lower rubber bushes perish enough to make it noticeably lower? Is there any part that could fail other then the spring to drop it effectively an inch?

OR does the polo coupe normally ride lower on the rear?

Personally I've always found there is a little bit of 'anti-rake' on polos. If you carry a lot of heavy stuff in the back then spring helpers may help

You can use 6n springs, they're a bit harder because the coils have wider spacing.

Also, what are Spring helpers? I've read about these on adjustable coil overs but not for fixed Spring setups.

There are different spring rates. I don't know the codes or the colours of the ones game used.

Spring helpers are also spiral rubber block that sits in the coil, packing out b couple of coils. Caravanners use them so their tow cars aren't on the deck.
