Blown up my gearbox on my 1.4 16v 6n. Lowered it and I'm guessing put too much pressure on shafts. Will any 6n box fit and how much difference will it make to ratios? Found a 1.0 box for £108. Other boxes are around £200. Need it asap

Try and find another CWX box if possible but any cable change (important bit!) will fit your 6n. This kinda limits you to the newer 6n boxes. Nothing from an earlier polo will be of use as the gearbox casings do not have the fittings to allow you to bolt the cable change bollox onto.

So as long as it's cable change it should be okay? Need to see if I can find a list of cable change boxes and get one ordered.

Can anyone confirm if cable box codes begin with a D? I think my current box is a DXJ based on the picture Liz sent me when I told her the box had gone.

Liz's is a later car so it probably has a Dxx series box. D & E series are cable change.

The gearbox currently on the car is a DXJ, so as long as the code starts D or E it should be cable change?

Are most 6n's electronic speedo? As Liz thought that makes a difference too.

Have a look at the PDF's in this http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=317419 and look for any that are post 97/98 fitting as they will be cable change

Will a 6n2 box fit Nige? The one in the link above came out of a 1.0 and is a decent price, would that be suitable, or is fitting a 1.0 box tempting fate?

6N2's use the same 085 boxes with cable changes, the only problem with a 1.0 box will be the ratios not being ideal for your engine, other things like the bearings are the same regardless of what engine they were fitted to so it's not that a 16v box is any stronger than the 1.0 8v

Yeah, the ratios will be different but would they be longer or shorter?
I've found this so if my logic is right most of these should be acceptable?

Diesel boxes are not an option from the starter mounting being different and the 6N2 uses a totally different 02* box, I'm just trying to find the original PDF's to reload them as for some unknown reason after a certain time they drop off the system ????

Am I right in thinking that the 'E' code isn't really any good to me though? Need to find one sharpish and all the ones I've been offered so far have been rod change.

Ideally you want to find one of these CWX, DSP, DXJ, DXM or ETC as these were the various ones fitted ex factory and yes 200mm clutch if you cant find one of the ones I've listed

Not found a single one on eBay with any of those codes. What a pain. DKF and DXD are the only half decent ones, DKF being 6n2 1.0 and DXD being 6n 1.0. Assuming both should be cable change but don't know clutch plate size cos they're not listed in those PDF's or the link I found.

There's a DXJ for £200+£50 postage. All the 1.0 boxes are closer to £100.

DKF was fitted to 1.4 6N1 96~98 with either 190 or 200mm DXD was fitted to late 6N1 1.0 but is 190mm

So neither are really suitable. Might just have to bite the bullet and buy the DXJ for more than I was hoping. Just got to hope it turns out to be a decent box.

Clutch plate might be the wrong size though? Would it still be cable change if 96-98? That one would be preferable as its half the price...

It will take a 200mm clutch as it was fitted on certain engine options, and it will be a cable change according to Elsawin as it was manufactured post the change to cable change

The clutch has nothing to do with the gearbox. You're confusing yourself unnecessarily. Any 6n1/6n2 petrol clutch will fit any petrol 085 'box so forget that for now.

All you need to focus on are ratios and cable fitment. Almost all 1996-2002 hatchback 'boxes are cable, and you can always ask the seller if it has a linkage on it. Don't buy a 1.9 diesel box as it has the wrong bellhousing and won't bolt to your engine - but tell me if you find one because i'm after one myself!

So ratios then - Nigel has put up excellent PDFs which show what has what. For a 16v, generally all 1.4 8v gearboxes are about right depending on your preference, and these advertised without a code tend to be cheaper because they're common and the seller can't find the code.
