Mk2 Polo brakes? Help!

Featured Replies

Ay up! What's the easiest/most effective way of increasing braking?

I've thought about swapping the master cylinder for a bigger one..

What's anyone else done?

master cly on its own wont make it better

basic upgrade is vw2 calipers and venter discs , make sure the rears are good and ajusted right

if you will run bigger wheels you can fit 256 vaux set up

or try and add a servo , I'm going to see if i can use the mk1 golf linkage to run a servo on the passenger side, its the lack of a servo that makes them feel poor

Aha. I thought about servo, didn't want to go to that extent, I heard about vw2 calipers being an upgrade. What parts would I need? Calipers, carriers, discs and pads....

put your foot harder on the pedal haha! :pardon:

I am using the Vauxhall conversion but stock 13" wheels will not clear the calipers. I am trying 15" Mini wheels which have loads of clearance. Consider a remote servo like those available on Car Builder Solutions. That will give you the added safety if you are going faster. I have a rare what is supposed to be a conversion based on a Mini Metro master cylinder but I don't yet how much clearance this will give to the inlet manifold and turbo pipework. Pipework will have to be altered to suit it and I will be adding an adjustable proportioning to make sure the rear brakes are getting the right pressure.

239mm vented discs and the vw2 carriers would do it(g40 or low spec mk2 golfs) ...thing is while vented makes it an upgrade it will only stop them overheating , the diameter is the same so normal day to day use will feel just the same , just your brakes would last a bit longer when racing

watch out for the remote servos ...most are single circuit so a downgrade in saftey

theres no cheap /super easy to get awesome modern feeling brakes ...infact if the standard ones are all in good order it will actualy stop well , it just feels funny , you have to get used to using your whole leg to brake rather than at the ankle

any chance of some decent photos please?

I find a steel toecap and mid sole works as an effective brake servo.

So long as they're serviced up, the brakes will stop the car (so long as they're not the pre-84 brakes, which don't work past 100mph), they will actually stop it bloody well in fact, they just won't inspire confidence as they do it. Good tyres make the difference.

The main reason for an upgrade is they're prone to warping discs, especially if you're prone to driving "enthusiastically".

You could fit braided lines too if replacing front calipers.

Then better pads (EBC Greenstuff have mixed reviews). Ferodo DS2500 well liked but costly.

I'm running bog standard brake set up but with braided hoses. It has stiffened the pedal up nicely.
