9n Brake upgrades

Featured Replies

Evening guys.

Just wondering if anyone has upgraded their brakes on their 9n from stock? I have a 1.4 TDi, and although my brakes perform well, I just fancy slightly more braking ability, especially as my daily drive is through the countryside.

The chances of wildlife popping up at any moment is high on my daily drive (more so around 6am) so any upgrade options will be considered.

  • Cheapest way would be better pads, some more fast road orientated or track. I'm not sure what upgrades there are for the 1.4tdi if any. I think for a considerable upgrade you'd need fabia vrs hubs,

  • I've just binned a set of pagids, didn't rate them at all. Still breaking the Brembos in at the minute, so can't say how good they are yet.

I'm not sure what upgrades there are for the 1.4tdi if any. I think for a considerable upgrade you'd need fabia vrs hubs, polo gti hubs, pd130/1.8t Ibiza 6L hubs and you could then go to 288mm discs or go for some 312mm brakes from an Audi TT mk1, octavia vrs etc etc.

But yeah pads is probably the best way to go if you don't want to make major changes and or want a cheaper option

Cheers for the reply Dave, I later found another post which I didn't find when I used the search feature, that's basically what you just reiterated.

I'm on the verge of needing new disc's and pads, so will prob do as you suggest getting fast road pads.

Any recommendations on what standard discs to get? I've seen some Mintex disc's on Ebay for approx £35-£40, are these any good?

Yep, nothing wrong with Mintex.

If you've got the smaller brakes, you'll need the hubs, carriers and calipers to go to 288mm and bigger.

I've got a full set up 288's with the hubs and the rear disc setup I might sell. They're on an Ibiza 6L TDI that I got for spares.

I think mine are 256mm, but don't quote me on that.

I've got some work to do on the car tomorrow anyhow (new rear wiper arm, and fit Auto headlights), so will have a look at size of disc while I'm at it.

Any suggestions on Pads?

I've got standard size discs on my 9n and I'm using brembo discs and pads and they are really good tbh. I got them from gsf! 90 quid for discs and pads :)

Is that £90 for all four corners?

I've used Brembo's on my old Fiat Stilo and the Mrs old BMW 318i, and I liked them a lot. Just wondering if there was any other brake disc's/pads combo's that would suit the Polo.

I've just bought some Mtec rear discs 232x9 for my Octy £48 drilled & slotted, the fronts are 280x22 and they are £66

I've just binned a set of pagids, didn't rate them at all. Still breaking the Brembos in at the minute, so can't say how good they are yet.

Agreed, have never rated Pagid, as I used their pads and discs all round on my Volvo and all I got was loads of dust with no braking and ate through the pads in 3600 miles!!

I would recommend any Black diamond pads or discs as I have and still use them on my different cars

Something like EBC would probably do you well
