I am thinking of taking my project car to the next level and I'm thinking of using megasquirt. This was a great idea until I saw the price for a new unit. I have found a very reasonably priced used one.

It is set up for a ford v6 with various custom bits. My question is do these have to be physically set up for a specific engine ? Or is it just software based.

I have no issues with rebuilding it, one of my hobbies is building pcb's so this is basicly a bigger puzzle.

I'm sure there are a few people on her that are using these.

I have been reading many pages on this but I think I'm either going dumb or they aren't making sense.

I have M3/3X. Some mods are done to suit various applications so check what the PCB should look like stock. It just needs reprogramming on Tuner Studio for a different engine. (the Lite version is free) There is lots of manuals on msextra.com and all the forums will get you answers pretty quickly. Also in DIYautotune.com will get replies to you and where you can buy parts that you may need. The level of support is brilliant. It's worth checking if there is a test sequence for MS1 so at least you know it works as it should before you put it on an engine. I am starting with a fuel only tune so I will be walking before I can run. You can store different tunes in Tunerstudio so you may be able to change tunes on a device in the car after you stop and switch off. ExtraEFI.co.uk has some good resources including a lot of You Tube videos. Let me know if there is anything you want help with because the Americans have a different way of explaining things sometimes which ends up being confusing when it doesn't need to be. Check with the manuals if you can log what your engine is doing because they usually want a log file posted on the forum so everyone has a chance of diagnosing any problem you may have. Megalogviewer may need to be downloaded as well. A Jimstim can be useful for powering the MS on the bench and simulating some functions but I would say the documentation for it is rubbish. I think they are mostly useful for ignition simulation.

These really do have a lot of features and I think it's something right up my street.

I had a Similar thing on my Honda some years back but never got into tuning with it and just paid someone to do it for me so never realised how awesome it is.

I don't know if you have a dyno in east sussex but I think we have sussex rolling road close by. Ultimately that will be how you get your tuning close but to fine tune you will need a mate in the passenger seat tweaking the VE tables and any other table that you can tune on the fly. Also a VFR gauge will make sure that you don't go lean at any stage. Have a look through Tunerstudio and see what you can do. Obviously I know what can be done with MS3 but not MS1 so I am probably wrong about your ability to keep logs of your tune.
