hi I have recently got a twin headlight grill for my polo and I'm going to wire the middle lights up as my polo was a single light grill originally. The lenses on the Middle lights look like a spot light rather than a fog and there in the grill not low down like a fog light. but on my fog light switch inside the car there is two settings so that got me thinking are they fogs? Does any body know if they are fogs or spots? And does anyone know why there is a two stage switch on my rear fog light. Cheers

They can be either. Generally, on early ones they're a fog and later ones they're a spot. One looks clearer than the other, but I can never remember which way round it is (fairly sure the clear ones are spots and the ones with a lot of different angles inside the lens are fogs, but don't hold me to that). Bang 12v to one of the lights and see if it's bright and straight forwards, or dull and aimed down.

The foglight switch on most VAG's (mk2 polos included), does front fogs only on the first click and front and back on the second. There's normally a hole in the plug on the back of the switch that you can get a spade connector onto to connect the front fogs.

If it's spotlights, an upgraded headlight loom is a good move - makes loads of difference to the current delivery.

I know the spots had Hella stickers, think the fogs did as well.

Where would I get a loom from a was going to wire them up on a relay then in to my high beam switch on my stalk but if a new loom would my candle lights brighter that would be a bonus

A good fog light will give a flat topped beam, whereas a spot light will be more round.

If they are in fact FOG lights, the last thing that you want, is to have them come on with the main beam - even the best of fog lights would be overpowered by the glare from the main beam being reflected back off of the fog.

As well as the mounting hight, Construction and Use Regs say that FOG lights can ONLY be used in fog or falling snow.

If you do upgrade the wiring, don't forget the earth connections, or there will be little improvement.

Thanks I looked at them tonight and on the garage door the beam pattern is the same as the high beam pattern so I think they are spots and I found a new headlight loom on eBay so hopefully will have them wired up next week cheers for the advice

So I swapped a quad lamp grille in to mine ages ago and still haven't wired up the fogs/spots. Was speaking to someone the other day and he mentioned that they should just come on with the main headlights. I'm not convinced on that.

He also mentioned that if I want the loom for the extra lights it's a full bay loom.

My question being, is it easier for me to just source a loom than wire it in myself? And if it is, is it a full bay loom?

Ok, I think typing that last post out made me think some stuff through on this lol.

I ran it through in my head, and am I right in thinking that the inner spots should come on with the full beam lights?

In which case I can just splice in to the headlight loom for the spots?

It's normal to have spot lights linked to main beam,

It is fog lights that don't want to be on the main beam circuit.

vw wired it so that the inner spots come on with the main beam , they did this by just crimping into the existing lamp wires, but this really isnt man enough and the lights will be poor so if you can make up a relay loom to provide full power to the bulbs
