Common rust areas on Mk2's

Featured Replies

I'm rebuilding my Mk2 at the moment and wondering where I should be checking for rust, especially hidden areas. Areas I know where to check are as follows:

  • Under the battery (seems to be fine)
  • Behind the fuel filler flap and the inner skin (definitely some rusting going on here).
  • Underneath wheel arch trims and plastic side skirts (we will see soon)

Are there any other places I should make a point of checking? Thanks!

screen surround once the screen is out

Inside the doors near the hinges and tailgate where cable grommets sit. And rear sills.

Everywhere

Yep as Harris said, everywhere. The common Mk2 rust patches is the Mk2..

yeah thats true enough....just have a good look everywhere and also look for recent paint jobs that might be hiding stuff

you can punch in the reg into the mot history site and see previous mot fails and comments to give you an idea

Cool, thanks! I've had the car for 15 years now and the previous owner kept all of the paperwork, so the MOT history is well known! I'll make sure I pay special attention to the areas mentioned.

I've found all of mine are a lot worse on the drivers side. Ideally you want the tank, rear beam and all the interior out and have a good poke about in those areas.

I would have thought the nearside would be worse what with roadside sludge gathering in the verges. Maybe there's another factor at play. These bits will definitely be coming out, so I'll have a good look around. Thanks :)
