Hi guys

I've been driving my polo for just over a month and i got in it this morning and there was a buzzing/droning sound that changed when i turned the steering wheel or switched the lights on or off does anyone know what thus coukd be?

Also

Since I've had the car it has had a squeek/squeel coming from the belt, it sounds like its coming from the bottom pulley and gets quieter when its greased however after a short while it returns any ideas on how to sort this?

First of all, the drive between the pulley and the belt is intended to be a friction drive, so greasing it tends to defeat the object, and will in any case, eventually destroy the belt.

I would suggest that you treat it to a new auxiliary drive belt, but after removing the old one, clean the outer rim of ALL the pulleys with a rag with some petrol on it (no need to be soaking wet) but keep changing the rag until all traces of grease are removed, then wipe them with a dry rag and allow to fully dry before fitting the new belt.

It is also worth checking that the automatic belt tensioner is working.

The noise that you hear, is the belt slipping on the pulleys, due to its inability to transmit the required torque, this is why you hear it more as you turn the steering wheel - this puts more load on the belt. The same goes for the alternator, you may notice that you get the noise when you first start the engine, then it becomes less noisy after a few minutes - This is because the starter motor takes a lot of power from the battery, which the alternator then attempts to replace, putting a lot of load on the drive belt.
