I was having a browse and saw mad price difference in tanks. Has anyone had any experience with these? I changed my tank if 2003 for one I was told was excellent quality but the fit was diabolical and the filler neck is about 1/2 inch too low and 1/2 inch too right!I was really stuck at the time so had to live with it!

If replacing it again would want one that fits as well as possible.

2 in Euro, both say carb, but wondering would it be for different body types or just different qualities?

I believe the aftermarket ones are all from the same source, I think it's Klokkerholm.

You'd be lucky if you can find a genuine original VW one for a similar price.

Choice of 2 carb or injection, got mine of german ebay its been fine for the last 2 years, filler neck may need a slight bend.

Not been on in a while, what I was wondering is that there's a fair price difference in the options but if they're all defo just the same no sense going for a dearer option!

<1982 (Mk1 and early mk2) - Smaller tank (27 litre sounds familiar, but I need to check this), which can be a bit hard to get hold of. A larger, later tank can be retrofitted to early mk2, but you will need to weld in the handbrake lever from a later car and use the later cables.

1982 - 1990 - Carburetor fueled cars - Larger tank than <1984 cars (42 litre) - These tanks have two pipes on the bottom of the tank for a gravity feed. If you use a tank from a later car, you'll need to convert to an electric fuel pump.

1990 - 1995 - Fuel injected cars - Larger tank than <1984 cars (42 litre) - These tanks do not have gravity feeds at the car lifts the fuel using a pump in the level sender unit (under the plate under the back seat base). If you're fitting an carb'd tank on an injected car, you will need to do something with the gravity feeds. A common answer is to loop them together with a bit of pipe. If you're doing this, do make sure the pipe is somewhere safe and can't end up scraping anywhere. 

 

The main fitting problem is that the necks can get bent out of shape in transit.

 

Give any new tank a good painting / rustproofing, as they are supplied in a very light primer. 

Both the Eurocarparts tanks look like late mk2 (carb) ones in the pictures. If I were taking a total stab in the dark, I'd say the second one is meant to be an early mk2 tank. That, however, is a guess.

 

The GSF tank is a late mk2 (carb) one.

Probably felt like 27 litre with filler neck rusting away.

 

36 litre. There's a chassis mounted wheel for handbrake cable in the way of 42 litre tank.

 

I made custom cables based on shortened mk2 Golf items with brazed nipples for the drums. Mk2f axle beam with its brake cable divider would have been much easier, but I didn't know that and just as well -  my rear beam has integral ARB.
