1.6 carb on 1.3?

Featured Replies

So, in the summer I will be hopefully doing some work on the polo to get it looking pretty and all lol and looking for some parts to improve it, (gt cam, stainless exhaust...)

Just curious if anyone's put a pierburg carb from a 1.6 golf on a 1.3 polo? or maybe carb and manifold but I think the manifold port locations are different

looking at the rubber flange/gasket for the two carbs they look the same and also the bottom of both carbs look the same, was hoping that they might get a little extra fuel into the engine but not an excessive amount that will make it worse.

I say the golf 1.6 over a weber due to the cost of them and also everyone goes with the weber because they're a simple carb to tune up.

The golf carb I'm talking about is the 2E which would replace the 2E3 on my polo

In case anyone calls me stupid for putting carb of this size on a 1.3, (which I could be but anyway...)  I know it has been done on a different car so its not completely ridiculous but engines vary a lot as to what they can take so it might not be possible in this situation.

Thanks in advance :)

James

Pierburg 2e2 from Golf 1600 in good condition is a joy.

Has a 22 primary and 26mm secondary venturi (same as the GK's Pierburg 2e3) so plenty of top end.

Are you planning anything else to help engine breathe?

You'll need to jet down the main a little (say to X112.5) from X127.5 for the 1272cc Polo engine.

Can probably adjust for idle (which is 42.5)  just using idle mixture screw.

Cheers dude that's what I wanted to hear ahaha

How do you mean breathe, what would you suggest? are you talking turbo or air filters?

by jetting down would I have to buy a new jet or modify the existing one?

I take it they're a direct swap?

Breathing. K&N style air filter, 4 branch exhaust manifold, GK inlet manifold, head porting, higher lift and or longer duration camshaft will all help air in and out.

Smaller jet means replacing by unscrewing with a tight fitting screwdriver very carefully. Find Serviceanweisung on Ruddies and there should be an exploded diagram to identify the secondary main jet.  The carb will have to come apart so might be worth getting a service kit (from eurocarb?) in case you tear the main paper gasket. See main jet stage 2 in this.

2e2components.jpg

You might be able to solder and drill the jet then use a needle file to get a smaller hole or you might not care as not often drive at high speed high load.

Carburettor Hospital sell Pierburg main jets. Probably worth buying 2 or 3 in a range from 110 to 115 ish as I'm not sure of the 2e2 air corrector size and you will have less CR than GKs 11:1 and pointless paying 3 lots of postage.

Or just the gasket eg

yeah got a 4 branch and straight pipe, gt cam which is longer duration than my standard one all waiting to go on in a couple of months when ill have time,

will have to see what air filters I can get hold of

so basically rebuild the carb with new jets?

cheers for this its really helpful!

The secondary main jet, but try it out on the engine first unless you know for sure all diaphragms and electrical auxiliaries work and no blocked internal channels.

The primary main will be probably be okay at 97 to 105,  but if there's a 110 in the carb already that may be too rich as 110 is 16% larger cross section than a 100.

Pierburgs are complicated and there's lots to go wrong.

You do know the Golf throttle cable loops around and pulls from front of car?

Edited by dvderlm
looked up 2e2 primary main sizes and there are several

  • Author

Yeah I've heard that it comes from the front, does that mean a straight swap with a golf cable or the the other end different?

also with air filters do you know the advantages of a RAMAIR vs K&N filter? I found a RAMAIR one specifically :

https://www.ramair-filters.co.uk/shop/automotive/carburetor-itbs-automotive/baseplate-filter-automotive/for-pierburg/ramair-foam-carb-air-filters-with-baseplate-pierburg-2e22e32e-e-65mm-bolt-on/

didn't know If that would be a better choice than a K&N pod or pancake?

Jets don't sound too bad, think I'll be able to manage them ;)

would this be the correct gasket for both carbs?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Carburetor-Flange-Mount-052129765E-Carb-Seal-Mounting-/401099553084?hash=item5d6365793c:g:5xoAAOSwGOxW~8Kg

Golf throttle cable and a p-clip on the mini coathanger end at pedal bar.

It goes through the bulkhead above pedals the same.

Or there are pedal throttle blocks intended for twin carbs you could use.

Make sure the cable can open both butterflies fully or you'll only have about 25hp

(guess how I know this)

and come to rest when release pedal with both butterflles closed smoothly.

That flange looks good to fit a Pierburg 2eX, where X is 2 or 3 onto a Polo carb inlet manifold.

Might be worth asking whether it is top quality Febi or Birth Spa make, as there are some crappy quality ones about

(inset threads pull out, splits within a year). I have used that seller for other items and been pleased.

Ramair foam is good stuff. I bought a layered sheet for another application that does not want cotton filter oil interfering.

The Ramair filter might be a bit tall.

I reckon there's about 75mm clearance from top of carb to bonnet, but that was with a Weber and guessing at a Bakelite spacer's depth.

Make a silver foil conical hat when carb is  test fitted, then close the bonnet. Crushed height of cone tells

you actual clearance. Engine will rock a bit under (de-)acceleration.

The spacer increases plenum volume and length from inlet valve to carb throat reducing ram resonant frequency and keeps heat away from the carb well and in the inlet manifold plenum where it belongs.

Oh that's good to hear, what inlet manifold do you suggest I use?

will the GK one make a noticeable difference from my standard one?

Yeah I think the ramair one will be too big then as it 100mm,

will go K&N then

GK inlet make a difference?

It is one of the things lifting HK designs  55hp up to 75hp standard.

Others are compression ratio, bowl in piston High Compression and Squish , camshaft, carb, Dignition, air filter intake, a cast-iron 4-2-1 manifold, 48mm OD exhaust.

oh ahaha thats quite a big difference!

what models had this inlet on them? is it a GK engine?

presume the mounting holes are the same on both sides of the manifold? making it it a straight swap

My engines a MH, will it fit? i noticed you mention HK

Yes engine code GK. Straight swap.

I think even carb and injection manifolds have same bolt pattern.

Some left hand drive carb models 1982 to 1990.

pretty hard to find the manifolds , recently found one myself on here , then another one came up that the seller didnt know what he had

re the golf carb and cable....i run a golf cable and have welded the polo pedal end of it on ....or you could mod the pedal itself to be like a golf

Thanks, that's really helpful to Know!

whats a polo sp?:nea:

Derby could also have the 75hp GK engine.

been on the look for a GK manifold but haven't seen one, just posted a wanted ad, just wondered if an abd intake is an improvement? or just as restrictive?

cheers
