Hey Polo People. Hope you're all awesome. As above, i currently have no indicators but my hazards work so i know it isn't the bulbs and my full beams also work. So i'm assuming the stalk itself is okay. I've checked the fuses, replaced any dead ones, still no joy. Took the casing off under the steering wheel earlier, nothing obvious or out of place there. Can anyone give me a next port of call before i hand it over to a garage? I did recently fit a new choke cable. Not a stock one so the unit behind the facia that it went through is now useless and i don't got a choke light on the dash. I can do that by ear/feel now anyway. Given the proximity to the indicator stalk/wiring, could this have any effect on them?

As above, i have checked fuses and replaced any duff ones with correct value. I have also replaced the flasher unit/relay that's next to the fusebox, just to be sure. As this has made no difference, i'm assuming it will be an issue with the stalk or wiring. I have little to no xp points with electrics. Does anyone have any guidance they can donate on how to check the wiring with a multimeter? Thanks again for stopping by and even more so if you can help. 

I'm assuming that your talking a mk2? I had an issue with my indicator stalk where i melted it short circuiting it with an aftermarket steering wheel boss, The lights worked fine but indicators did not, could suggest buying a indicator stalk and hope it fixes the issue, they're only £15 ish on ebay, I have no idea on the pins unfortunately so cant help you there, 

Yes. Sorry dude. Mk2 breadvan. Mostly stock. I do have an omp steering boss actually. My next port of call is the stalk. Just finding time to actually tinker with it. Thanks dude. I'll whip it off and see if that's the gremlin. 

My boss has metal pins on the back which were to turn the indicators off which the original are plastic so caused the short circuit, if they have caused a problem a new stalk is probably your only option.

try following the wires for a little bit and just jiggle them around to see if that makes a difference, can you hear the relay clicking when the indicators are on? same for hazards?

Honestly can't remember what the indicator cancel is made of on mine. Think it is metal. Is it worth maybe coating it with something to insulate it? Tape maybe? I have a new stalk on the way. Won't get chance to tinker for another couple days. There is no click when i hit the indicator. Just the one click when i turn them on or off. Hazards work as they normally do. Clicks and all.

Yeah it sounds as though its either the stalk or the relay, If the stalk does not fix it take the relay out and test both hazard and indicators and see if the work.not sure if they use the same relay or not?

 

If the hazards click and the indicators don't theen id suggest your issue is between the relay and the stalk (or one of them aha)

I already replaced the relay/flasher unit next to the fuse box. According to the haynes book, that's the one connected to the indicators. Is there another one i should be looking for? I tried to read the electrical diagrams but they made my brain go all itchy. New switch has arrived. Will be dicking around with it tomorrow. Also, turns out i was checking out the wrong multi plug when i had the lower cover off the steering wheel. I checked out the one right under the indicator stalk. The plug for the indicator is the other side. This didn't occur to me until the switch turned up. I thought it would be the wrong part as the pins were on the other side. Quick look at the haynes again and i realised the way the combination switches are mounted, the plug for the indicators is the other side from the actual stalk. 

aha yeah I forgot about that as well, if you've already replayed the relay try the stalk and if that doesn't work then we can go from there, you could put a meter on the CORRECT contacts and check the voltages while your there  ahaha

 

if itrs not the stalk then it is most likely down to the wiring, check the terminals are all connected properly. was the relay you used a new one or used?

Relay was new from halfords. I still have the stock one. Changed the stalk over, still no joy. My steering boss has a plastic indicator cancel so i can't see that being an issue. Something is blowing the fuse though. I checked the fuses again just in case. One of the new ones i put in had blown. I replaced it again, fired her up and it blew again. Would that suggest a knackered wire somewhere considering the bits i've ruled out already? 

is it the correct fuse?  i'm assuming you've checked the obviously accessible wires to check nothings visibly wrong, its definitely shorting out somewhere if its the right fuse,

i think mine are all 8amp with one or two red fuses

I got a big bag of assorted fuses and swapped any blown ones, like for like. All the ones that were in there were white. I'm assuming they were all original fuses as i haven't changed any. 

I did check for any obvious visible issues but couldn't see anything. Those cables do snake up behind the dash/speedo so there's a fair old chunk i can't see. I'm not real good with wiring anyway. Took me ages just to figure out wiring my horn so i've now turned it over to a mechanic. I didn't want to but i've done all the bits i'm comfortable doing. Hopefully hear something real soon. 

Thank you for guidance so far. I'll post the results for closure. Bound to be somethin simple. 

So. Turned the biege beast over to a mechanic. After all the stuff i had tried, it turned out to be a knackered wire shorting the circuit behind the glove box. Probly from me taking it off and putting it back on again repeatedly, trying to fix bonnet release cable and speaker wires, (which still don't work!) Dude literally rocked up, grabbed my car while i was working and brought it back a couple hours later. On a Friday night no less. Anyhoo, all done now and it really was somethin simple. Thank you for following and giving me guidance. Very much appreciated.
