Evening gents.

 

Finally got all the suspension changed on the front, but I'm getting a rattling from the front on both sides.

 

Happening when the road is rough or I go over bumps. I've tried tightening down the shock retainer nut with some large stilsons and I think it helped the noise, but I can't get it any further on for the rusty thread. Is this the most likely culprit?

Did you replace the strut top mounts when you changed the front suspension if not it could be those

Yeah man, replaced the lot. New everything bar the struts. Even a new offside tie rod. Everything is torqued etc so I figure it must be the shocks jumping around in the strut.

 

I will have to have another look tomorrow. I'm thinking that the new strut retainer nut is deeper than the original,  needing threading further on, but the strut thread is rusted to hell. I'll undo the nut, wire brush it, WD40 and try again.

 

Quite annoying...

common trick for this is place a 2p coin under the new damper , its known that some brands wont fully tighten

 

could get a deucthmark or peseta for oem ness

Cheers Steve. I think I was starting to realise this last night.

 

How about going the other way? If I get some thick rubber sheeting, cut it to shape and use it as a washer between the top of the shock and the retainer nut?

 

Really would rather not take the whole lot out again...

i think id prefer a washer myself...that way it wont compress or degrade over time and cause more agro

 

decent hardware shop will have some massive washers
