6n2 ignition barrel or switch turns off whilst driving

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a 6n2 1999 1.4 polo 3dr.

Recently I had problems with the ignition switch but the mechanic could not remove it from the steering column. So he fitted a manual push button just nearby to start the car. All was fine

Now I get the following problem. When driving they key moves back round ever so slightly. Maybe 5mm anticlockwise and that is enough to cut out the car. Only solution is to stop, restart and then carry on... I can see that its the key moving. Soon as I restart all is fine. If I hold they key there I can drive OK. But thats not gonna be a good way to drive. But it proved that its the key moving.

Need help on what is the problem. Is it the switch again. Or this time the barrel where the key goes in

Changing the switch is out as he can't get it off. Barrel? Is that an easy to replace? Separate key I guess but I could live with that

Any other ways round this.

I'm gonna try some diy!! Hence the question here. I'm sure mechanic could fix and charge me as well!! Trying to see if its something I could attempt

Many thanks

It sounds as if you really do need a new ignition switch.

This is a real fiddly job - but doable.

I would recommend that you get hold of a Haynes Manual - all the details are in there. Be sure that you get the exact one for your model and year, though.

Hi

How heavy is your bunch of keys ?

Hi. Yes I thought that. It was heavy. Has that caused the failure? If so that's a new one for me... Anyway I removed everything and for a while it worked. Now even on its own it does not work.

I have read u need a special tool to get at the ignition. A puller? Is there any way round this. Or can I hire one etc. Any ideas.

Thanks

Hi  Thanks for the doc - just what I needed.  It mentions a puller as well so that the next step.  Buy tool and then have a go...
