I recently fitted a new IMASAF GT/G40 pattern exhaust to my GT and thought I'd post here in case anyone is hunting for a standard exhaust for a MK2F.

 

It's 45mm O.D all the way front to rear, and uses three 48.5mm clamps at the flanges.

 

It seemed to fit well; the only thing I found was that the backbox hooks are pinched close together, so I had to bend the rear underbody hangers inward and use longer rubbers to reach them.

 

The photos compare the system with the very cheap 'ebay special' exhaust it replaced. It can't be seen here but the mid-rear join on this was 35mm O.D and it strangled the engine. It runs much better with the IMASAF system.

That's fantastic Dude as the post I put up not so long ago on my original gt exhaust and a cheap replacement one off ebay the difference in bore size and bend and sets in pipe work was stupid.. I have been on the search every since and ended up fixing the original vw gt exhaust till I came across a good replacement.. So for £100 I shall buy one ..

I got the system as a complete set from ebay.

 

It's quiet and fitted together well - the clamps I thought were a better fit and easier to adjust than the usual U-clamps. They're wide enough to cover the slits in the flanges, aiding sealing.

The mid-section outlet is angled slightly down, so the backbox tube easily clears the rear beam - but sits slightly lower overall at the back than other systems. This might be due also to having to bend the hangars down as mentioned.

Thanks for posting your experience with the IMASAF exhaust. 

In a somewhat similar fashion I've been on the search for an exhaust for my Polo 9N (2002 1.2 12V).

Options are hard to come by as VW want the earth and the moon as my exhaust comes in 3 sections (excluding the manifold which houses the catalytic converter) and Ebay ones are cheap and rubbish!

Other options are custom stainless steel but for my system it would be expensive as it's in 3 parts or a Jetex but I don't want a silly exhaust on my 1.2!

 

My exhaust is original but the outer shell has worn off on the back box, it's not leaking as the inner shell is intact so they'll mention it every year at my MOT and every year I come back and I tell them "I told you it'll pass".

It'll probably go on for many more years but my reason for replacing sooner rather than later (asides from it potentially falling apart and leaking) is because the down-pipe is not original!

A couple of years ago my gearbox mount snapped and my exhaust got stretched (the flexi bit) and so needed replacing. I initially put on a cheap pattern down-pipe but the engine feels like it's choking ever since I did that! 

With only 65hp under the hood (minus however many bhp I've lost in 14 years) that's not what I need!

 

I've bought an IMASAF complete kit from Ebay for £275 delivered from Germany - seems like the best one going, pricey but hopefully as good quality as the one you've bought.

 

I will pop back in a couple of weeks once I've taken delivery and had it fitted to show comparisons.
