Hi all, the polo keeps giving me a headache... 

The radiator fan isn't switching on by itself and on one occasion the temp has gone over 90 in heavy traffic. When driven the car is fine but when it idles for a while it starts going over 90. 

 

The problem is that there is no radiator fan switch... The connector has been cut off... i got a new connector from a scrapyard, not from the same car but the plug is the same, the only difference being that the new connector has thick red/white, red/another colour and red/another colour. The wires that are on the car are thin wires and have completely different colour coding. Every vag car i have looked at with the same sensor has the same red thick wires.

I can activate the fan using vag com.

 

Do any of you guys have any idea of what i could do?

If you have A/C? the wires from the thermo switch signal the fan control unit so they are low current, there isn't anything you can activate with VCDS

Yes it has A/C. 

Is there anything i can short out or damage if i connect the wires the wrong way? 

I performed a self test in 'auto HVAC' and the radiator switched on for a few seconds and switched off.

I have been trying to find a loom and connector that is off the same model and spec, but so far I've had no luck. 

Are you sure that there is an actual problem?

The normal running temperature is about 90°C and the fan does not normally come 'on' until it has gone quite a bit above this.

If your car is normally running well below 90°, it may be telling you that the thermostat is not closing.

Thats the problem, if I'm stuck in traffic for about 5 minutes the temperature shoots up, doesnt go into the red but stops climbing just before it. I cant hear the fan kicking in. 

 

The car warms up as it should from my perspective, usually within 3 minutes of driving.
