Does anyone know why this happens?????

The best that I can offer are a couple of 'might be'

It could be due to worn engine/gearbox mountings.

It could also be the selector linkage that needs adjusting.

It could even be that the gear itself is worn, necessitating stripping the gearbox - unless you are prepared to 'live with it' until it gets worse.

Any honest genuine answers to this problem??

With these cars the best thing you can do is get a gearbox specially repaired. Christian has a great write up about it on his site.

Makes a very interesting read. Baring in mind any gearbox replacement is going to be worth more than the car so you've got to think to yourself, is this a car I'm going to keep....

Could be wrong but I very nearly purchased a caravelle recently with the same problem.  I spoke with my VW specialist and he advised that someone at some point has been a little to harsh with reverse and been shoving it in and it's chipped a tooth.  Am I right in thinking there is no synchromesh on reverse?

To to remedy it you had to hold it in gear whilst reversing which most do anyway so I wouldn't worry to much....
