Hello! Shameless first time poster here as im after some help with a fault thats sprung up recently with my 2010 1.4 SE. 

 

Ive had an intermittent issue with my drivers side rear light cluster not working when i turn the car over in the mornings. The indicators work fine when it happens, its just the red side light that seems to be affected. The problem also throws the yellow bulb error light on my dash whenever it happens, although opening the boot and closing it fairly hard makes the light cluster come back on again (though the dash management light stays on until you restart the engine).

 

Im assuming theres a loose connection somewhere but having fiddled about with the light cluster connector behind the felt panel in the boot it doesnt appear to be the culprit. Is there a common issue with these models? I dont seem to be able to find any other similar symptoms online but am wondering whether theres a bad design in the loom that runs to the boot hatch that causes it to rub on the hinge or something (as happened with one of my old golfs).

These kind of things are fairly common on all cars not just polo. What has most likely happened is moisture has got between some connection in the light. 

Best way is to take either the light board or complete assembly off (not sure how they are on the 6R) so you can see the metal contacts for the bulbs and preferably where it connects to the wiring connector. 

Pull each bulb out and check for black marks where the metal contacts touch the bulb and clean any off with something like a small flat head screwdriver etc and the same on the bulb itself. 

Then go on to the pins for the wiring connector and do the same, nice clean metal makes a better contact. 

Also have a close look at the plug on the cars wiring, they look like little + signs from the top and these should all be nice clean metal, if it has some corrosion or a green tint you will have to scratch it away. 

 

That at should sort it the problem as they are the easier and most common thing to cause this.
