Just received a replacement battery top fuse box for my 6n (part number 6X0937550) but stupid me didn't check the picture against the old one..

 

The one I've received has two bolts for connecting cables, whereas the one I'm replacing had three. The unit itself LOOKS disassemblable, but after having to butcher my old one to get it apart (and made a few holes in my fingers in the process) I thought I'd ask you guys whether this is advisable or not.. while the bleeding stops! :-S

 

Should I be taking it apart to add in a bolt for the third cable, or should I send this one back and buy one with three bolts already on it? Any tips for taking it apart so I don't break this one in the process?

It maybe too late now, but if it were mine, I would send it back and swap it for the correct one - You certainly won't be able to send it back once you have modified it.

Yup, that's exactly what I did! Got the correct one fitted now.

Just for anyone who is reading this in the future wondering the same thing, yes you can take them apart. 

If you look at the underside all the way around the edges there are little indented tabs. Work your way around it using a small flat head or a strong knife to push into these tabs and then the whole thing will split into 2 halves. 

The top door is detachable by fully opening it and unclipping it from the frame. 

You will have to remove all the fuses before taking it apart. 

Once it's apart you will have to unclip the bus bar that connects to the battery and add the 10mm bolts under it then put it back on. The other side of the fuse also has a 10mm bolt but this just sits in the hex cut out opposite the bus bar. 

Click it all back together then put the fuses back. 

I have used this many times to add a nice clean fused connection to the battery for things like amplifiers cables etc as its way cleaner then using a generic cheap plastic fuse holder.
