I'd like to get hold of an abd engine block for as close to free as possible. I'm not too fussy about whether it runs or not as long as it's not cracked or anything, the plan being to strip it, overhaul it, and eventually put the spare head I have on it.

 

Money is very tight right now so I just want a project I can concentrate on so I feel productive without having to break the bank, if I work on this over a year or so I hopefully won't notice the expenditure so much.

i had the same idea , found  and engine for £40 and did a semi rebuild , cost me way more than planned and i couldve spent /done alot more .....then you have to hope you got it all right and it wont smoke /grenade lol

It's something for me to think about. I mostly wanted one that needed a rebuild to 're-educate myself a bit. I might end up just getting a whole engine from a scrap yard and using it as it comes.

 

I like the idea of having one that I don't have to worry about too much to pull apart and slowly rebuild if anyone happens to have one sitting around going to ruin.

Abd engine has the same head as the 1.3 engines ect, was just wondering why you wanted to swap heads?

Cheers for that, I didn't realize the cylinder head was the same maybe I will just source a cheap whole engine. I assume the abd motors use an electronic fuel pump.

 

Yours looks rather shiny, what have you done upgrade wise? The head I have is from an MH engine and I've recently read that these have double valve springs, do you know if there are any other benefits to the MH head as I guess double valve springs can be put into any head.

think the actual head is the same , was me that found double springs in the MH 

 

the abd head has the carb drive blocked off so would need drilling out if you want to run the standard mech pump

I have a GT Cam Shaft that I was going to drop into whatever head I used so I'm not fussed about the mechanical fuel pump part of the head being blocked off. I assume the Polos and Golfs that have the ABD engine use an electronic fuel pump, and if that is the case can I try and get the fuel pump off the same car I get the engine from and use it to supply fuel to a Weber 28/32 DMTR?

ABD is found in Golf and Vento from 1991-ish, so they'll be fuel injection with a high to moderate pressure pump in a tank that's different from yours.

Carbs, especially little Webers, need high flow, low pressure (1.5 to 4.5psi).

For example

Facet Posiflow 60104 can flow 20 gallons per hour and lift fuel 12 inches and is quieter than the older Facet solid state ones, which should be mounted near tank, though no one has yet reported a problem with a solid state facet on inner wing.

 

A regulator (could be as simple as a T joint with construction or complex as a filter king) might let you use a moderate injection pump with a carb.

Electric pump really needs an impact activated safety off (inertia switch, normally open 2psi oil pressure).

 

 

 

 

Thank you, that's really helpful. I was under the impression that the 1.4l engines in polos were abd as well so thanks for pointing that out.

 

Fitting one of the Posiflow pumps near the tank shouldn't be too much trouble, I have looked into this quite a lot and always get stumped when it comes to the regulator and the safety inertia switch.

 

If anyone could give me more pointers on that side of things or even better links to exactly what I need to get I would be very grateful.
