Hi guys!

 

I recently bought myself a 6n2 1.4 16v from 2000, very happy with the purchase. Everything appears to be stock and I don't fancy slamming or body-kitting it but do like some usability features to be added / modded.

 

After opening my door with the lights on, there is no beep. Googled some, opened my Haynes manual and them together told me to check or replace the door switches. Interior lights pop on when I open the door, but no buzzer. I swapped the passenger switch with the drivers one to be sure, but still no luck.

Not the biggest issue, but would be nice to get this working (again?). Whats worse though, is that it did not make any sound when my tank went into the red; the light popped on but no buzzer / noise.

 

I tried removing the ABS-fuse and starting the engine, but since I do not have an ABS-error-light (does that automatically mean I don't have ABS after all?) I still can't say for sure that it did or did not make a noise when it should have done it.

Checked if I have a relay 36 installed, but only 19, 100 and 410 are seen behind the fuse-box.

 

Any suggestions to figure out what is actually wrong here? :)

The buzzer unit is a known failure item, some people have modified the speedo unit to add an external buzzer unit, if you have access to VCDS/Vagcom you can test the speedo unit including the buzzer.

 

I would be suprised if you didn't have ABS as it was in general only the lower powered engines and very basic spec that didn't have it, you can easily see the ABS control unit in the engine bay, at the back right side as you look into the bay, it's a black unit with 6 brake pipes going into it.

 

Not sure about relay 36 ?? there are no relays involved in the ABS system and looking at the dealer diagrams I can't find a relay 36 mentioned?? The only ones listed as fitted to the relay panel are the ones you mentioned and a #53 for heated exterior mirrors ( only cold climate countries)

Attached you find an image of my engine compartment where, according to my Haynes manual, the ABS unit should be located. This, together with the absence of an ABS warning light, makes me say quite sure that I do not have ABS. Weird, since I do have central locking, total closure & electric windows..

 

Relay 36 is a relay that volkswagen (apparently not in the polo, but only other models) uses as their buzzer relay.

 

Then, since the buzzer is build into the speedo unit, it will be tricky to replace I assume.. That would be a bummer.

Yes the 6N1 uses a relay in the fusebox as a buzzer, but yours is built into the speedo unit :(

 

The ABS unit would be in that area you've circled on a UK version I think they are in the same position on a LHD ? nothing on the other side of the engine bay ?

Nope, nowhere to be found.. This, together with the fact I have never seen an ABS light (not even while starting the car) makes me believe I do not have any abs. Weird, right?

It does seem a bit strange especially as you've got the 16v engine, I could understand a very low spec 1.0L not having ABS but not yours ???

 

In the fusebox on the battery, how many plastic blade fuses are there ? as that's where the ABS  control unit fuses are.

 

Looking at your image (where'd you found that? Looks like a sweet source) I guess you refer to S177 & S178.

Here's a photo of my fusebox on the battery; I don't have aircon so S180 is missing, but it seems like 177/178 are there..

Well that does look like you have ABS can you follow those two pipes coming from the master cylinder in that picture, they should go into the ABS pump/controller

 

The picture of the fuse layout is from Elsawin, it's a copy of the dealers workshop manuals, plenty for sale on eBay around £20 it covers all VAG models from 1995 to current, it's a large program 80Gb !! and can be a pain to get it working.

Stuff is getting weirder by the day.. I tried tracing the wire loom and then spotted only a single cable coming out of the fusebox. This would most likely be my radiator fan then (S179), which makes the other fuses obsolete..

Red/Yellow is the feed to the radiator fan switch, so it does look like the other fuses are just dummies !! very strange !! not like VW to fit surplus parts ??

Just came across a proper manual to replace the buzzer by soldering on an old headphones-speaker.

 

That was the repair I was referring to in my first reply, I just couldn't find it

The other day, i wanted to get out of the car and all of a sudden it buzzed! I processed it as normal and by the time I was 2 steps away from the car It started to sink in. Tested it later and indeed, it works magically again!

 

The only thing I can think of is that I repaired the dodgy wiring of the radio (previous owner hotwired the yellow and red so that the radio never lost its power)
