Over the past three years I have found the information shared by members on the Club Polo forum to be of immense value. Reading the discussions between members has often led me to solving countless mysterious maladies troubling my Polos. 

 

Now, by sharing some of my experiences of maintaining an Ocean Green Type 9N, I hope to help other enthusiastic owners enjoy their Polos.

Coolant Temperature Sensor Replacement

 

One afternoon, towards the end of 2015, the dreaded engine light flicked on. After consulting the Owner’s Manual, I duly booked the car in with a local garage. I was informed that the Coolant Temperature Sensor had failed. From my reading on the Club Polo forums this seems to be a common fault. I asked the garage for a quote to replace the sensor and was given a quote of £75. I opted not to have my hands cut off and thought that I could live with the engine light. The car was not presenting any other symptoms at the time.

 

 

A few months later, the car began having issues starting again after making short journeys. It took some time to realise this issue was related to the faulty coolant temperature sensor. After seeing a few articles and videos on how to change the sensor I ordered one on eBay for the king’s ransom of £5.

 

 

Once the part arrived I set about finding and replacing the faulty coolant sensor

On an instructional video, on YouTube, the demonstrator was able to deftly remove the old part whilst simultaneously sliding the new one into place. I lacked any such dexterity and all the coolant in the system came gushing out.

 

 

After mixing some G13 coolant with distilled water the system was topped up and I was eager to see if the new part worked.

 

 

The result of changing this part has been immense. The engine now starts smoothly every time. Also, the car now idles at 750 rpm instead of 1000 rpm and without excessive vibration. The following morning the engine light had gone off.
