Hi,

I've have a VW Polo 1.4 6N2 and noticed recently some smoke coming out of the bonnet. On close inspection I noticed one of the rubber pipe's connected to the engine having a few cracks/tears. Temporarily I have sealed this with insulation tape. I'm not sure the name of this pipe but would be grateful if someone can help me identify the name of this and how easy it is to replace. I've attached a photo with this post.

It's the crankcase breather hose #2 in the picture below, it should just pull off the heater unit #3

The part number is different to my one (036103474D is what my one is) but was wondering if it would still be compatible?

That one would work, but you would have to either disconnect the electric heater element (if fitted) OR chop this new pipe to the same length as the old one. 

 

I have eave replaced these pipes on various polos and I have found none of them last more then 1-2 years before breaking again. 

I have used universal silicon pipe recently and it seams a lot better. It comes in straight sections but is not difficult to bend, you can also get pre bent pieces. 

I think the size of the connection on the airborne is 14mm but measure yours before buying any pipe. 

 

Doesnt have to to be heavy duty silicone piping, it can be standard heaterhoseetc available from most motor factors for a £ a metre. 

Thanks I purchased this earlier in the week and had to cut the pipe to the same size as the old one in order to fit it. It was a bit of a struggle to fit at the bottom end since there isn't much room but I managed to get it on in the end. I do notice though that I seem to still get an oil burning smell from the area of the engine where the pipe is installed. Prior to replacing there used to be smoke and an oily smell but now there isn't any smoke. The car itself seems to drive fine and I haven't noticed any problems. Should I worry about the smell or can I ignore this?

If it's really bad ??  I'm assuming you have checked the other breather pipes for splits ?? If they are all OK, you could try removing the crankcase breather box on the rear of the engine, under the inlet manifold, and clean it out.

Thanks for the suggestion. I cant seem any tear in other breather pipes. The smell only comes when driving for a while. Perhaps when the car has fully warmed up. 
Would you have any diagrams so I can remove the crankcase breather box?

Just an update, I've cleaned out the crankcase breather box. It had some oil in it and also firmly re-attached the breather pipe. The air filter was pretty dirty as well. Im probably going to get another one.

So I've replaced the breather pipe and am still getting a burning smell and also an oil leak. I looked beneath the car and could see an oil leak coming from the oil sump. I changed the oil as it was due a service and also replaced the sump bolt and washer. After driving around I'm still getting the smell and it looks like it is still leaking from somewhere above the sump. I gave it a good clean and there seems to be alot of oil/sludge above the sump. I cant seem to find any damage/cracks to the sump or surrounding area. I have also noticed when driven for a while, when i look underneath the car there is a bit of smoke coming out from the exhaust manifold  but having had the whole exhaust inspected there isn't any damage to the exhaust. I suspect the smoke is coming due to the oil burning. Any ideas where this leak could be coming from?
