Hi guys, just looked at my engine mount and noticed there is a s**t ton of movement with very little effort on my part when trying to move the engine. I'm just wondering if anyone could give me a guide on what to do to replace the worn out mount with a new one?

The main problem is in supporting the engine whilst you change the mounting.

It is possible to support it on a jack from underneath, though I would not recommend this, as it is possible to damage the sump. If you do have to resort to this method, you need some wood between the turntable on the jack and the base of the sump (some old carpet between the wood and the sump would be even better.) - The object being to spread the weight of the engine and protect the sump.

A far better solution - and one that you can use for doing other work on the engine, is to make yourself a support beam to fit inside the wings.

For the beam itself, I would recommend some 3x3 inch timber with some 1x6 inch timber at each side, sitting in the part of the wing where the bonnet shuts (you will need to make some recesses in the underside to allow for the wing bolt heads to sit in)

B&Q sell metal brackets that you can use to join the two side pieces to the beam. You can also get from there, some 12mm threaded rod, some suitable nuts, some strip metal to make an inverted 'u' shape bracket to join to the lifting eye on the engine, and a heavy duty repair washer to fit on top - you then need an ordinary nut and bolt to pass through the lifting eye.

All this might sound complicated, but once you have all the parts, you will be able to make this beam quicker than I can type these notes!

Once you have the beam, it can also be used if you wish to remove the gearbox - just drill an extra hole to align with the lifting eye at the other end of the engine.
