Will an electric (self raising) aerial fit into the front wing of a Mk2 Polo or will the inner plastic wing get in the way and need modification ?

Fits no problem. Try to find one with a small top fitting.

The wing is quite narrow where the hole is, compared to most cars.

Great. This is good news. I will check if my aerial is suitable. When I am doing work with the indicator and the brakes, that will be the time to put the aerial in. Let's hope it doesn't rust like the one that's in there now.

I use a tube of aerial grease by Hirschmann bought over 20 years ago. I bet any dielectric grease would do. Smear some around the telescoping joints when extended, then lower and raise a few times.

Repeat every 6 months or so.

Yes I was thinking of using something like that because living by the sea means that anything that does rust will rust.

haha. Grease the bare metal where you attach and so earth the aerial on inside too.

 

I'd check your fuel tank filler neck, sills and battery tray drainage hole as soon as possible.
